PowerFlex(tm) polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle technology produces panel- and rib-free bottles for beverage applications. In place of sidewall panels, the technology features a proprietary diaphragm in the base of the container that is designed to compensate for the vacuum distortion that occurs as a hot-filled beverage cools. As the liquid cools, the diaphragm draws upward from the base of the container. It has both the thickness and the geometric characteristics to enable the inverted-cone-shaped diaphragm upward as the vacuum is pulled, the co. reports. Initial offerings will target 16- and 20-oz applications, with future developments in the range of 8- to 32-oz. PowerFlex bottles can run smoothly on most traditional filling lines, without requiring alterations to the line or compromising the filling process, the co. says.
