Impress Makes Major Breakthrough in Peelable Ends

The Easip end was developed with Bonduelle. Like Easy Peel, the end consists of an aluminium membrane heat sealed onto a metal ring. The ring is then double seamed onto a food can using standard seaming technology.

18/12/08 A new generation of peelable ends for use in continuous retorting processes has been launched by Impress, the Netherlands. The EASIP end has been designed and proven in industrial operations to withstand pressure differentials commonly found in high speed food processing.

Evolving from dry Easy Peel applications in 1960, peelable ends for batch retorts were introduced in 1997 for Saupiquet's Les Saladières products. These ends required overpressure in the retorts to ensure product integrity. The revolutionary new patented Easip end has been developed for continuous retorts where overpressure during processing is not possible. Easip ends are available in a range of diameters.

The Easip end was developed with Bonduelle. Like Easy Peel, the end consists of an aluminium membrane heat sealed onto a metal ring. The ring is then double seamed onto a food can using standard seaming technology. The technical breakthrough comes from the ability of the new Easip end to withstand pressure differentials of up to 1.3 bars in continuous retorts commonly used by international food groups. To compensate for the pressure differences during sterilisation the membrane is designed to flex, accommodating pressure changes which occur between the can and the retort during processing.

Easip ends are constructed using a steel or aluminium ring with an aluminium foil, reducing the weight significantly compared to a standard easy open end - by up to 50%; this is another example of an Impress development in metal generating a tangible contribution to sustainable packaging.
