Innovia Films receives Environmental Leadership Award
Innovia Films, the global manufacturer of BOPP and cellulose films used in the packaging and labels industries, has been honoured with an Environmental Leadership Award at the 2011 Chemical Industry Association (CIA) awards.
Innovia Films, the global manufacturer of BOPP and cellulose films used in the packaging and labels industries, has been honoured with an Environmental Leadership Award at the 2011 Chemical Industry Association (CIA) awards.
The Environmental Leadership Award is presented to the company that can demonstrate excellence in environmental leadership through the development or use of innovative clean technology or products that help reduce the environmental footprint of chemical manufacturing.
Wayne Horsley, Environmental Manager at the company’s Wigton site prepared the winning submission and attended the ceremony held in Birmingham recently. He remarked: “It is an honour for Innovia Films to receive this prestigious award. This is an acknowledgement and celebration of the hard work by all colleagues on our Wigton cellulose plant in recent years and demonstrates our ongoing commitment as a company to minimising our environmental impact.”
Cellulose (Cellophane™) films’ manufacturing has a long history in Wigton. Major investment in recent years has led to the full capture and recovery of carbon disulphide gas. The company’s latest developments in cellulose films include NatureFlex™. These bio-films are made from over 90% renewable resources (wood pulp). Since 2008 Innovia Films has offset the Global Warming Potential of coated NatureFlex™ films by working with leading carbon service companies and has invested in several projects including reforestation, solar ovens and anaerobic digestion.
Steve Elliott, Chief Executive of the Chemical Industries Association, paid tribute to the members of the chemical industry and its key partners, "This year's quality of entries reflects the outstanding contribution made by the chemical industry to a better quality of life for us all and a flourishing, growing industry. The CIA awards are about recognising that excellence. This offers tremendous encouragement and visibility to an industry which is largely unsung, all of the entrants should be proud of their success."
