Don Simon’s Horchata de Chufa by J. Garcia Carrion is the first pasteurised product of its kind in Spain. As a summer refreshment normally consumed in the afternoon, Chufa, pronounced [CHOO-fuh], has its origins from ancient Egypt. It is said that the chufa nut was even found in the tombs of the ancient Egyptian pharaohs. The Arabs introduced the chufa plant to Spain during the time of the Moorish kings (700 B.C. a 1200 A.D.) and the eastern Spanish province of Valencia was the best for growing chufa. Horchata de Chufa brings numerous health benefits as it contains high levels of iron and potassium, does not contain sodium, and is valued for its minerals and vitamins. “Horchata’s consumption has now extended beyond Valencia, into other parts of Spain as well. This product is typically sold cold and consumed in the places where it is produced (at the Horchaterias) and eaten with some kind of pastry as an afternoon snack. Packing it in a Tetra Rex gable top package reinforces the freshness of the product and it tastes great when consumed cold”, says Joaquin Morales of Tetra Pak Spain, who coincidentally grew up in Valencia himself. Don Simon’s Horchata de Chufa has a shelflife of 40 days and is sold for 2 Euros per 1L Tetra Rex carton.
