Südpack launches bio-based PLA film for plant packaging

Südpack has launched Planova, a bio-based, biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) film solution for potted plants, flowers, and herbs. 

Made from sugarcane or corn starch, the PLA film offers stability and protection to fresh plant products. 

“Restrictions on the use of conventional plastic films, the steadily growing volume of packaging waste, and the increasing focus on more environmentally responsible packaging solutions are prompting the industry to rethink its approach,” says Südpack. 

PLA also offers multiple molecular benefits, attests the global film producer. Planova films are gas-permeable and do not require microperforation, allowing moisture to escape and air to circulate, “preventing rot and keeping delicate products fresh for longer.”

Moreover, Südpack explains that, unlike paper, the material does not become soggy when placed in a bucket of water or during watering, “so its protective function and optics remain fully intact.” 

Floral film protection 

Planova films are available in thicknesses ranging from 15 to 100 μm and widths from 200 to 2,300 mm. The films also offer printability, enabling brands to customize designs for applications or for identification and consumer information.

Südpack adds: “Planova combines functionality and attractive product presentation with the use of renewable raw materials. It is ideal for premium flower and herb packaging where protection, freshness, and visual appeal must all be ensured.”

Recently, Südpack launched two packaging formats for sensitive foods using modified atmosphere packaging and vacuum packaging technologies to reliably and safely store foods such as salmon fillets, tuna chunks, smoked trout, shelled crayfish, mussels, and shrimp skewers. 

Meanwhile, Südpack Medica introduced MedHub, a service for consumers to order high-quality, pre-made medical pouches in standard sizes and defined batch quantities.
