Walki Wisa - Wrapper with Less Plastic

In the long term the breakthrough of WALKI Copy Green is likely to lead to a decrease in the amount of plastic in traditional wrappers.

01/12/06 The new WALKI Copy Green ream wrap reduces the plastic content to half. Ream wraps have traditionally contained some ten per cent plastic to protect copy paper against moisture. First in the field, Walki Wisa has recently launched a new wrapper with less than five per cent plastic. “Many of our German customers have asked for this kind of a product since it saves them money. The product is classified as mono-material in Germany, which means lower waste fees,” explains Henri Grönroos, Business Manager for Paper Packaging at Walki Wisa.

Rising plastic prices

The new ream wrap is known as WALKI Copy Green. The biggest challenge was to make the plastic layer thin enough without compromising the moisture barrier. Many years of development work have now made it possible. “The price of plastic keeps rising hand in hand with oil prices. This has resulted in a general attempt to minimize the volumes of plastic used,” says Grönroos. Reducing the amount of packaging material is a universal trend, not least because the EU Packaging Directive encourages it.
