Weekly Roundup: Graphic Packaging secures AR Packaging acquisition approval, Crown joins Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s innovation network

15 Oct 2021 --- In packaging news this week, Graphic Packaging secured all mandatory regulatory approvals to acquire fiber-based packaging manufacturer AR Packaging in a US$1.45 billion cash deal. Meanwhile, Crown joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Network, partnering with other organizations to innovate, develop and implement circular economy solutions. Also, The Paper Lid Company and Metsä Board unveiled a 100% recyclable paperboard lid for takeaway beverage cups.

Graphic Packaging obtained all mandatory regulatory approvals for the acquisition of fiber-based packaging manufacturer AR Packaging. The US$1.45 billion cash deal was announced in May. “Acquiring AR Packaging will result in significant value creation opportunities for our customers, our employees, and our stockholders as we bring together two leading providers of fiber-based consumer packaging solutions,” said Michael Doss, Graphic Packaging’s president and CEO.Smurfit Kappa’s Vitop tap made from bio-based PP resins.

Smurfit Kappa purchased a state-of-the-art 600,000-ton containerboard mill in Northern Italy. The Verzuolo mill was acquired for a purchase price of €360 million (US$418 million). “We are pleased to complete this acquisition ahead of schedule. Verzuolo brings a highly experienced and skilled team providing additional security of supply for our customers. As we continue to invest in our corrugated facilities, Verzuolo strengthens the group’s integrated model and supports our sustainability ambitions,” commented Tony Smurfit, Smurfit Kappa Group CEO.

TricorBraun agreed to acquire premium glass packaging supplier Vetroelite from LBO France. The acquisition strengthens TricorBraun’s European presence and continues the company’s global expansion. “The Vetroelite team has established a strong reputation for high-quality, innovative packaging solutions, fueled by deep expertise and dedicated customer service,” noted Court Carruthers, TricorBraun president and CEO.Every Can Counts teamed up with hard seltzer brand White Claw.

In brief: Circular economy partnerships
Crown joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Network, which brings together businesses, innovators, universities and thought leaders to build and scale a circular economy. As a network member, Crown will partner with other organizations to innovate, develop and implement circular economy solutions. “Through our experience with the recyclability and infinite reusability of metal as a sustainable packaging solution, we are thrilled to collaborate with peers in the Foundation’s Network to drive scalable and meaningful impact,” outlined Dr. John Rost, vice president for global sustainability and regulatory affairs at Crown.

Every Can Counts partnered with hard seltzer brand White Claw to improve drink can recycling. White Claw will collaborate with Every Can Counts, drink can manufacturers and the wider recycling industry to raise awareness around recycling in the UK and Ireland. As part of the partnership, White Claw will provide funding to the Every Can Counts program, with both brands working together to spread the message that metal drinks cans are infinitely recyclable.The Paper Lid Company and Metsä Board’s  100% recyclable paperboard lid.

In brief: Pack launches and adoptions
The Paper Lid Company and Metsä Board unveiled a 100% recyclable paperboard lid for takeaway beverage cups. The lid is made from a fully recyclable dispersion barrier board and suitable for use with both hot and cold beverages. It uses a novel technology developed by The Paper Lid Company that makes it possible to form the paperboard into the desired shape. The result is a one-piece lid that clicks firmly in place and offers performance comparable to traditional plastic lids.

Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box introduced a more environmentally sustainable version of its Vitop tap, made from bio-based PP resins. The bag inside the box is already manufactured from E-recycled film EVOH, containing raw materials sourced from plastic chemical recycling. The latest bags are composed of 53% recycled and renewable content.Euromilk’s Kukkonia UHT milk in SIG carton packs.

ProAmpac launched ProActive Recyclable Paper Mailers, curbside recyclable mailers with up to 70% lower water absorption versus a standard kraft paper mailer. Utilizing a robust paper, the mailers ensure package protection during transit. “This new paper mailer offers the water resistance required to ensure that goods arrive at their destination as intended, as well as being curbside recyclable through paper recycling streams,” reiterated Brent Wise, sales vice president for ProAmpac.

Euromilk switched its Kukkonia UHT milk brand from PET to SIG carton packs, marking the first time an Eastern European brand has adopted the Signature packaging material. The polymers used to laminate the paperboard are 100% linked to renewable, forest-based raw materials. Euromilk says it aims to appeal to a younger, eco-conscious consumer by making the transition. SIG’s standard carton packs are made with around 70-80% renewable paper board from FSC-certified sources.
