Weekly Roundup: Rapak delivers laundry detergent Bag-in-Box, SÜDPACK Ecocraft Skin hits shelves

20 Sep 2019 --- Rapak, part of DS Smith Plastics, has developed a durable Bag-in-Box solution in response to an increase in the e-commerce demand of laundry detergents and other Consumer Packaged Goods (CPGs). SÜDPACK Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper Ecocraft Skin has been brought to market for the first time with Swiss meat and sausage specialist Rapelli for its Ticino-style “grill snail” sausages. Also, globally operating Austrian packaging producer Constantia Flexibles has completed its acquisition of a majority stake in the Russian group of companies TT, which specializes in pharmaceutical packaging.

DS Smith’s Rapak division has designed a bag for Bag-in-Box laundry detergent comprised of a Biaxially-oriented Nylon (BON) lamination, providing good barrier and high puncture-resistance. Rapak bags are available with the Detergent tap, a top-push dispensing tap used on rigid liquid laundry containers today, or the VINIflow tap, a self-closing, top-pull dispensing tap. Both taps are manufactured by Worldwide Dispensers and offer user-friendly dispensing, excellent directional flow and no post-drip.Ted Baker's seasonal e-commerce pack, created by DS Smith.

DS Smith has also created a seasonal, reusable e-commerce box for Ted Baker. Working collaboratively, a completely recyclable box was developed with the aim of Ted Baker reusing 20 percent of its boxes annually – a target that has already been exceeded with an average reuse rate of 27 percent. As part of this revamp, packaging production was on shored – moving it from the Far East back to the UK – a decision which contributed to the reduction of company’s carbon footprint, while allowing the brand the flexibility to update the packaging design to reflect seasonal campaigns and the reactivity to deal with increased peaks in trade.

SÜDPACK first introduced its Ecocraft Skin at FachPack 2018, a project that was still in development at the time. Now, the first product to employ the new packaging solution has been brought to market: Swiss meat and sausage specialist Rapelli’s Ticino-style “grill snail” sausages. The company was reportedly “won over” by the combination of high product safety, visual appeal and sustainability. Upon request, the base of the Ecocraft Skin can employ a combination of FSC-certified paper and extremely thin plastic film. The high percentage of renewable raw material reduces the percentage of plastic to a minimum. The Savourists – a savory snack bar producer – has unveiled a bold new visual identity, delivered by branding agency B&B studio. The multi-dimensional, unique taste and textures found in The Savourists have been brought to life graphically through layered, patterned imagery and color that reflects the diversity of the brands elevated snacking experience. The patterned design, illustrated in-house by B&B, contrasts with the often simple aesthetics of many mainstream snacking brands, the design agency says.

Constantia Flexibles has completed its acquisition of a majority stake in the Russian group of companies TT. Now known as Constantia TT, the plant in Voskresensk mainly produces packaging for the pharmaceutical industry. Constantia TT is the second plant of Constantia Flexibles in Russia, the first being Constantia Kuban located in Timashevsk. More than 100 employees at the new site play a role in meeting the demand for flexible packaging in the pharma industry of Russia and its neighboring countries. The pharma product portfolio of Constantia TT comprises printed blister foil as well as sachet and cold form material. KeyKeg – a global leader in PET kegs – has expanded its European footprint with the appointment of two new official resellers of KeyKeg and UniKeg – Apiglass in Spain and SwedBeer.se in Sweden. These appointments complement the firm's global network of warehouses and reduce the supply chain, helping minimize its CO2 footprint and save on logistics and response time.

KHS' regenerative beer stabilization is now available for smaller breweries with yearly outputs of up to 70,000 hectoliters. The systems provider will be presenting the youngest member of its ECOSTAB family at the BrauBeviale. Thanks to its movable base, the Innopro ECOSTAB S can be flexibly integrated into the production process. Also, the stabilizing system is characterized by low media consumption and the cost of investment.

Stora Enso has conducted a trial with Fiskeby Board in Sweden to explore the possibility of recycling used paper cups into white-lined chipboard (WLC). The trials confirmed that paper cups can be utilized as valuable raw material to produce WLC board without any investments or changes to the process conditions at Fiskeby Board Mill. Used paper cups are today largely an unused resource, yet they have the potential to be recycled into new products. Past trials conducted by Stora Enso at Langerbrugge paper mill in Belgium have shown that cups are valuable raw material for magazine paper, and now the Fiskeby Board trials confirm the suitability of cups for recycled board production. With paper cups as part of Fiskeby’s normal raw material input, the quality of the WLC board showed no defects, and no problems were experienced in the pulp and board production processes.
