Siegwerk spotlights functional coatings as key to recyclability and compostability
Siegwerk has acquired the chemicals producer Allinova to expand its coatings capabilities. The acquisition of Allinova reflects “a clear and accelerating trend” toward functional coatings becoming central to sustainable packaging innovation, according to Siegwerk. “Brands and converters are no longer just looking for inks or surface treatments, they’re demanding solutions that enable recyclability, compostability, and reuse. Allinova’s raw materials portfolio, especially its water-based dispersions and specialty additives, aligns perfectly with this shift,” Gilles Le Moigne, head of circular economy coatings at Siegwerk, tells Packaging Insights.

PulPac licensee launches Dry Molded Fiber lids in Asia
HZ Green Pulp is commercially producing Dry Molded Fiber coffee lids in Malaysia. The molded paper pulp manufacturer is the first PulPac licensee in Asia to bring the alternative to plastic to the market. HZ Green Pulp is established in wet-molded fiber and commissioned its first PulPac Modula machine earlier this year. The company says it can now supply Dry Molded Fiber products to local markets and multinational brands. While coffee lids are the first product produced, additional Dry Molded Fiber food-service applications are expected to follow.

Nestlé Nigeria achieves 50% recycled PET inclusion in water packaging
Nestlé Nigeria has become the first company in the country to incorporate 50% recycled PET (rPET) into its water packaging. Nestlé is a founding member of the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA), Nigeria’s first producer responsibility organization. FBRA was established to advance EPR and ensure that producers and importers of packaged goods take active responsibility for the post-consumer stage of their packaging materials.

Saica Group has started construction on its second US Saica Pack corrugated plant in Anderson, Indiana, after investing more than US$110 million. Quadpack has released the Serenity Tube for eye cream solutions. According to the cosmetic packaging solutions provider, the tube is available with an aluminum barrier layer or polypropylene, with an ethylene-vinyl alcohol barrier for formula protection. The cap is made of polyethylene. Moreover, the spatula-shaped applicator helps absorption by gently massaging the skin.

Amazon has announced that, starting next year, its prep and item labeling services for Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) shipments will no longer be available in the US. To improve operational efficiency, e-commerce sellers on the platform will be in charge of ensuring the FBA reaches Amazon’s fulfillment centers ready to ship.  Currently, Amazon offers prep services to help protect products during shipping and ensure compliance with FBA requirements. However, the company cites a steady improvement in seller packaging capabilities and a desire to streamline fulfillment operations as reasons for the shift.

California settles lawsuit over false recyclability claims...
The California Department of Justice (DOJ), US, has settled a three-year investigation into Revolution Sustainable Solutions, Metro Poly, PreZero US Packaging, and Advance Polybag for false recyclability claims and the sale of non-recyclable plastic bags in the state of California. The four packaging manufacturers previously sold plastic bags certified to meet recyclability requirements, as required by state law SB 270. However, the California DOJ found these are not recyclable in any recycling stream.

Plastic packaging waste decreasing in the EU after...
A dataset released by Eurostat has revealed that plastic packaging waste generated by EU citizens is starting to decline after a steady rise since 2013. The new data shows that in 2023, the EU created 79.7 million metric tons of plastic packaging waste, or 35.3 kg per person.  The current figure per capita represents a reduction of 8.7 kg from 2022, although it remains 21.2 kg higher than it was in 2013. The highest amount of plastic packaging waste was generated at the height of the COVID pandemic in 2021, followed by a decline in the subsequent years.
