Weekly Roundup: CEFLEX opens up flexible packaging consultation, BillerudKorsnäs unveils plant-based barrier paper

13 Dec 2019 --- This week in packaging, The Circular Economy for Flexible Packaging initiative (CEFLEX) launched an open consultation to further enhance and refine its Designing for a Circular Economy Guidelines. After feedback from CEFLEX stakeholders, the open consultation encourages input from the entire value chain to make flexible packaging in Europe circular by 2025. Also, BillerudKorsnäs unveiled Repel Pure, a paper where the grease-resistant barrier is plant-based and totally biological, and Berlin Packaging completed its acquisition of Novio Packaging Group.

CEFLEX announced that it will collaborate with the wider flexible packaging industry to make flexible packaging in Europe circular by 2025. To date, over 140 stakeholder companies have joined CEFLEX’s “Mission Circular.” The guidelines have been conceived “to build an understanding of end of life processes, give practical support and advice on circular economy design principles and make design choices for recyclability clear.” All non-CEFLEX stakeholders are invited to give their feedback and help ensure this goal is met.

BillerudKorsnäs launched Repel Pure, a paper where the grease-resistant barrier is plant-based and totally biological. The bio-based barrier combined with first-class sustainable primary fibers means Repel Pure is a grease-resistant food packaging material that is “extremely environmentally friendly.” Repel Pure is renewable and biodegradable thanks to thMoriyama is the first customer in Japan to run commercial production using SIG filling technology.e innovative barrier being entirely plant-based. Paper-based packaging that is used in bakeries, food outlets and quick service restaurants (QSR) often contains a treatment of a non-decomposable high-fluorinated chemical, known as PFAS.

DSM, a global science-based company in nutrition, health and sustainable living, announced new sustainability ambitions for Dyneema, touted as “the world's strongest fiber.” The goals include the introduction of a bio-based feedstock for Dyneema. By 2030, at least 60 percent of Dyneema fiber feedstock will be sourced from bio-based raw materials, enabling our DSM customers to shift to a more sustainable product and solution, without compromising on fiber performance. By 2020, DSM will also establish an industry coalition consisting of customers, waste processors and recycling companies to address the recycling of end products made with Dyneema fiber.With vertical edge protection, Mosca's EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-H reliably secures and supports fruit trays, plastic crates and other stacked products.

Berlin Packaging announced the completion of its acquisition of Novio Packaging Group, a Netherlands-based supplier of plastic packaging with expertise in personal care, pharmaceutical, food, and sports nutrition verticals. The addition of Novio Packaging to Berlin Packaging’s existing European companies, comprised of specialty glass market leader Bruni Glass, closure experts Bruni Erben, and four other companies acquired in 2019, creates “the continent’s first packaging supplier” for all markets and substrates. Berlin Packaging announced a definitive agreement to acquire Novio Packaging on October 29, 2019.

Ardagh Group, Glass – North America secured a long-term supply agreement with St. Julian Winery to manufacture its wine bottles. The new agreement pairs the longest continually operating and largest winery in the state of Michigan with the largest domestic manufacturer of glass bottles for the U.S. wine market.

Tokyo-based 50-50 joint venture DNP • SIG Combibloc announced that dairy manufacturer Moriyama is the first customer in Japan to run commercial production using SIG filling technology and the first to offer premium ready-to-drink (RTD) products in SIG carton packs locally filled in Japan. Moriyama’s new premium RTD products, in combifitMidi and combiblocMidi 1000 ml aseptic carton packs from SIG, will be filled at the company’s production plant in Kanagawa Prefecture on a CFA 812 filling machine from SIG.Sidel integrated a lean, unifilar 90° infeed system in one BINA’s shrink-wrappers to deliver a “reliable, disruptive and compact line layout.”

Strapping machine specialist Mosca revealed that it will be showcasing solutions designed to simplify processes for specific types of products and production environments at LogiMAT 2020. Featuring a new vertical edge protection system, the high-performance EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-H machine secures and supports stacked boxes and other combined products. The compact EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6 KR-ZV is specially designed for hands-on work processes.

Sidel integrated a lean, unifilar 90° infeed system in one BINA’s shrink-wrappers to deliver a “reliable, disruptive and compact line layout.” Part of Swiss M-Industry (Migros Group), Bischofszell Nahrungsmittel AG (BINA) is driving the increasing health and wellness trend in the country via new formats for its organic juices and iced teas. To help shrink-wrap their latest, squared bottles alongside the traditional rounded ones, BINA needed a flexible, compact and easy-to-handle shrink-wrapping system for film packs and tray plus film packs.
