Award-winning ice cream from the Deep South gets new look
Deep South has re-branded its ice cream to enhance its image, to clarify its market position as a true premium product, and to reinforce its multi-award-winning credentials. It is also expanding distribution into the North Island.
What Southlanders and Cantabrians have known for many years, the rest of New Zealand is about to discover- Deep South makes the best ice cream in the country!
Since its beginnings in Invercargill over 30 years ago, Deep South's ice cream has always contained 12 per cent milk-fat content, making it creamier, but also more costly to manufacture than other ice cream brands.
The new packaging lifts the product well and truly into the premium category. It features beautiful images of southern New Zealand landscapes, cleverly tied in with the individual ice cream flavours, and carries the slogan "we make our ice cream here".
Recent New Zealand Ice Cream Awards medal successes are featured, and there are plenty of them.
This year Deep South's Vanilla Ice Cream took out the Supreme Award at the NZICMA New Zealand Ice Cream Awards for the second time, an unprecedented feat, and won Best in Category Award for Premium Vanilla Ice Cream, giving it a Best in Category win for a record tenth time over the past thirteen years. This makes it far and away New Zealand's most-decorated "plain" Vanilla.
Awards for vanilla ice cream carry a lot of weight with ice cream experts, who know that this is the true test of ice cream quality - defects have "nowhere to hide".
A statement from the NZICMA said the six judges "described this vanilla ice-cream as 'simply the best' - no indulgent flavours to hide behind - this ice-cream is simple and clean with perfect texture".
Christchurch business consultants Mike Killick andAlex Hopkins bought Deep South, established in 1979 by Southland's Simon family, in December last year.
Deep South has one factory in Invercargill and another in Hornby, Christchurch - historically most of its sales have been in Southland, Canterbury and South Canterbury.
The "new" Deep South arrived in North Island supermarket freezers for the first time last week, and debuts in the South Island this week.
