Berlin Packaging acquires Juvasa Group to secure Iberian packaging leadership
09 Aug 2021 --- US-based Berlin Packaging has acquired the Juvasa Group, a group of Spanish companies focused on the supply of glass, plastic, and metal packaging for the F&B industry.
The Juvasa Group offers custom packaging design services through Avanza Packaging, its in-house design studio, and supplies bottles and jars for olive oil, wine, spirits, sauces, vegetable preserves, honey and other products.
“With the addition of the Juvasa Group, Berlin Packaging is by far the largest packaging distributor in Iberia – a crucial market in Europe,” says Paolo Recrosio, CEO of Berlin Packaging, EMEA.
“More importantly, our combination with the Juvasa Group allows us to offer even more products and services to our customers, helps our suppliers continue to grow their businesses, and creates more career opportunities for our employees.”
Bill Hayes, Berlin Packaging’s global CEO and president says the acquisition will allow for the company to expand, not only throughout Europe, but also in the Middle East and Africa.
“This partnership also enhances our already formidable design capabilities, with design studios located in the US, Italy, the Netherlands, and now Spain,” he says.
Family business
Recrosio is touting the acquisition for both the reach it provides his company within the region and the familial nature of Juvasa Group.
Jesús Valle Sánchez, CEO of the Juvasa Group, says being a family business was also a central reason for selecting Berlin Packaging as a partner.
“We are confident that our relationship with Berlin Packaging will enable us to bring even more value to our customers and strengthen our position as a market leader in Iberia and beyond.”
Berlin expanding
The Juvasa acquisition follows a long-running expansion, in which Berlin Packaging has bought into various businesses around the continent to grow its presence.
In 2019, the company acquired Verrerie Calvet, a packaging supplier strategically located in Aimargues, France. Verrerie Calvet brought Berlin Packaging a strong experience in packaging for wine, spirits, olive oil and condiments.
Last year, it acquired Vinkova, a Dutch supplier of food and beverage glass packaging solutions.
Berlin Packaging secured a US$500 million investment in 2018 from Oak Hill Capital Partners and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) to fund its European expansion.
In May, the company also released a market trend report for personal care packaging highlighting sustainable materials and reusable packaging.
The five-page report provides insight into the trends driving packaging innovation and consumer purchasing patterns within the personal care industry, including a focus on health and hygiene.
