Borealis strengthens Italian market presence with Rialti acquisition
06 Jul 2023 --- Borealis is acquiring Rialti, an Italian PP compounder and recycler for injection molding and extrusion. The investment will strengthen Borealis’ circular portfolio by adding recycled compounding capacity and meeting growing customer demand for environmentally sustainable solutions.
The transaction’s closing is said to be subject to customary regulatory approvals.
Based in Varese, Italy, Rialti is one of the European market leaders specialized in producing sustainable PP compounds with a focus on mechanically recycled PP feedstock from post-industrial and post-consumer waste.
With over 30 years of experience, Rialti utilizes its annual capacity of 50,000 metric tons to make injection molding and extrusion PP compounds with applications in different industries, including automotive, appliances and construction.
“During the past decade, we’ve made steady progress in our circularity journey. The addition of Rialti to our portfolio will expand our circular offering and strengthen our ability to serve our customers in meeting their sustainability ambitions. As such, we continue reinventing essentials for sustainable living,” says Lucrèce Foufopoulos, Borealis’ executive vice president for Polyolefins, Innovation & Technology and Circular Economy Solutions.
Borealis in the news
Borealis is participating in a project together with Enviro Systems and Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden to reduce the carbon footprint of West Sweden’s chemicals industry. The partnership is leveraging combined knowledge to develop the next generation of Enviro’s pyrolysis-based recycling technology.
The European business for base chemicals, fertilizers and the mechanical recycling of plastics also entered a collaboration with Kenyan social enterprise Ecopast to develop the country’s circular economy and promote the rights of informal waste pickers – the majority of whom are women and children.
Borealis said it would fund Ecopost’s waste recycling activities and help formalize waste pickers’ work by financing “entrepreneurial start-up kits for the youth and women groups.”
