Clondalkin Adds a New Extension to Thornton’s Chocolate Box

Clondalkin Consumer Great Harwood and Clondalkin Pharma and Healthcare Northampton worked together to develop the 'Santa's House Selection Pack' - a personalised selection box in the style of a house, featuring a porch with an open and close mechanism.
The house is a tuck-end carton with four windows and graphics to replicate the front of a house, and home to some of Thornton's much loved chocolate Christmas characters, including Santa who takes pride of place in the porch.
The porch was created by using a special tuck-end carton with a sloped top, to give the impression of a roof. A fifth panel was then created to allow the porch to be opened and Santa individually iced in-store with a personalised message. The window panel can then be re-closed.
The selection pack also features a 'spot the difference' game on the reverse of the packaging.
Jon Basford, Business Development Manager Clondalkin Pharma and Healthcare, explained; "The challenging part for our design team was creating a unique carton style that met the customer's brief, had strong shelf-appeal and was easy to erect. The process of fitting the porch to the house, after filling, needed to be simple and easy for Thornton's operation team, but secure enough to endure the distribution process.
"After extensive testing, a simple, but effective locking tab at the top of the porch was developed, whilst the base section was securely affixed to the base of the house with a locking tuck-in tab."
Kerry Hatton, Business and Product Manager at Thornton's, said; "We were looking for a packaging solution that enabled us to combine our flat back and hollow chocolate characters in a themed pack, and which offered customers something unique. The movable porch means we can add a personal touch, appealing to both children and adults.
