Constantia Flexibles creates recyclable pharma sachets for high-barrier product protection
19 Feb 2021 --- Constantia Flexibles is releasing a mono-material sachet for pharma products. Branded Perpetua, the packs are designed as a more sustainable version of current high-barrier packaging solutions on the pharma market.
Perpetua is the Austria-based international flexible packaging producer’s first recyclable polymeric mono-material, and has a wide range of uses in pharma packaging applications.
Available on global markets, Constantina is highlighting Perpetua’s strong product protection against oxygen, water vapor and light.
Safeguarding the pharma industry
High protection against moisture, oxygen and heat are essential for safeguarding active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and ensuring patients receive effective medication.
Constantia’s goal in designing the packaging was to meet the high-barrier quality pharma products require “while implementing the best possible sustainability standards.”
After various trials, Perpetua was the result. The material devised is part of a recyclable product family based on a unique line of full polypropylene (PP) high-barrier laminates.
The solution is available in application-tailored versions. Perpetua is certified by Institut Cyclos-HTP – a German recyclability, classification and assessment company.
Its recyclability was assessed as ranging between 90 percent to 96 percent, depending on the individual material specification.
One of the material’s advantages is there is no trade-off between quality and sustainability; its high-barrier properties and lower environmental footprint do not limit the packaging’s design possibilities, says Constantina.
Pierre-Henri Bruchon, EVP of the pharma division at Constantia Flexibles, comments: “Sustainability plays a decisive role in all our business activities. Therefore, the development of a more sustainable but at the same time high-barrier solution for pharma products like Perpetua was of high importance to us. It is the perfect packaging solution for pharma products.”
Medical pack innovation
Constantina’s pharma pack innovation joins a host of packaging designs targeting the medical supply and pharma industry.
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented a number of challenges and opportunities for the packaging industry to increase medical products’ safety and sustainability.
Last year, metallization and PET producer Camvac leveled-up the production output of its medical and core food packaging solutions by transitioning from a two-shift to a three-shift 24-hour operation as the COVID-19 pandemic drove up demand.
UK-based paper packaging specialist Antalis this year developed specialty ergonomic packaging for vital medical equipment, designed to aid people with limited dexterity, especially those having just received a diagnosis of life-changing spinal injuries.
