DS Smith has collaborated with BSH Nazarje, a Slovenian company part of BSH Home Appliances Group, to develop corrugated cardboard packaging for Bosch hand mixers — the DS Smith Universal Protection for Household Blenders.
The fiber-based solution replaces the brand’s previous protective expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) inserts used for packaging their household blenders.
BSH Nazarje is said to produce 170,000 blenders annually, with each product requiring two EPS inserts. The new solution is expected to eliminate up to 340,000 pieces of EPS.
Jožica Hojnik, director of sales and innovation at DS Smith Slovenia, says: “When a customer entrusts us with a challenge such as the reduction of EPS, we are excited to provide them with an innovative packaging product and to build a collaborative relationship with them at the same time.”
“With BSH Nazarje, we have developed a packaging solution that is technically sophisticated, simple, and efficient, while utilizing a minimum of materials and ensuring recyclability. We are dedicated to helping our customers move toward the circular economy.”
Cardboard protection
The corrugated cardboard packaging solution for Bosch hand mixers by DS Smith and BSH Nazarje.DS Smith Universal Protection for Household Blenders replaces EPS with a protective corrugated cardboard insert called Safe Shell, designed for three different hand mixer models.
Rok Štifter, director of shared development services for the Small Household Appliances Division at BSH Home Appliances Group, says: “When we are looking for new packaging solutions, we do not compromise between efficiency and sustainability. With DS Smith, we have proven with Safe Shell that it is possible to combine both for a faster process, equal protection, and use of fully corrugated cardboard.”
“Sustainability is more than just a goal for us, it is our direction for the future. That is why we need partners who understand the complexity of our business and are able to think strategically and innovatively at the same time.”
The solution is said to support BSH Nazarje by enabling faster packing time on the production line.
According to DS Smith, the packaging is fully recyclable and does not require any changes to be made to Bosch’s existing boxes, pallets, or packaging processes. The company ensures easy integration and enhanced durability for transportation.
