Elopak readies tethered cap cartons for market entry ahead of EU requirements
21 Apr 2022 --- Elopak’s Pure-TwistFlip tethered cap solution is set to hit shelves ahead of the EU’s Single Use Plastics Directive. The legislation requires that caps and lids on beverage containers up to 3 L must remain firmly attached to bottles, including after opening, from July 3, 2024. United Caps produces the Pure-TwistFlip cap.
The Pure-TwistFlip has been designed so that the closure remains attached to the carton throughout its entire lifecycle, thereby reducing the risk of it being littered.
The cap is also Elopak’s lightest screw cap to date, helping reduce the use of plastics. It can be combined with any Pure-Pak carton to create an original packaging solution that prioritizes the environment, safety and consumer convenience.
“We are delighted to share the news that our tethered cap solution will soon be available to customers. The Pure-TwistFlip is a fantastic addition to our current portfolio of opening features that meets the tethering requirements of the EU’s Single-Use Plastic Directive well ahead of its deadline in 2024,” says Patrick Verhelst, Elopak’s CMO.
“As Elopak’s lightest screw cap to date, the Pure-TwistFlip 29i also represents a great option for our customers outside the EU who are looking to adopt more [environmentally] sustainable packaging solutions. We look forward to supporting those who choose to make the transition in the coming weeks and months.”
United Caps’ CEO Benoit Hencke adds: “Innovating together on the Pure-TwistFlip meant combining our 80+ years of experience in cap design with Elopak’s outstanding packaging concept to bring together elements of usability and [environmental] sustainability. The result is a tethered closure that performs for today and tomorrow.”
Renewable cartons
Elopak’s Pure-Pak cartons are made using renewable, recyclable and sustainably sourced materials. They offer customers a natural and convenient alternative to plastic bottles.
The supplier’s previous solutions have a strong focus on environmental sustainability and reducing the use of plastics, reflecting its commitment to contributing to a net-zero circular economy for packaging.
These solutions include the Pure-Pak Imagine carton – a modern version of the company’s original Pure-Pak carton that comes without a screw cap. Designed with a new easy-open feature, it contains 46% less plastic and is 100% forest-based.
Elopak’s Natural Brown Board cartons are renewable, recyclable and have a lower carbon footprint than conventional cartons owing to reduced wood consumption, one less layer and fewer bleaching chemicals.
Elopak in the news
Also this month, Elopak and liquid packaging producer Nippon Paper Industries entered into an agreement in which Nippon Paper will produce and sell Elopak’s lineup of Pure-Pak packaging for liquid F&B products worldwide and introduce them to Oceania.
Last year, Elopak acquired Naturepak Beverage Packaging, a leading gable top fresh liquid carton and packaging systems supplier in the Middle East and North Africa region.
Tetra Pak and SIG have also unveiled new tethered cap solutions.
