Emerald Packaging has replaced over one million pounds of virgin PE with post-consumer recycled (PCR) material in 2025. The flexible packaging manufacturer says the shift toward PCR supports the goals of its industry partners.
Kevin Kelly, CEO at Emerald Packaging, says: “This milestone reflects Emerald Packaging’s commitment to the environment and our technical ability to deliver high-quality packaging while reducing the reliance on virgin plastics.”
“We’ve worked closely with our supply chain partners and customers to make PCR a viable and scalable part of our product offerings for those who are seeking sustainable options that meet performance standards without compromising environmental values.”
Last October, Emerald Packaging partnered with Idaho Package, Wada Farms, and Walmart to introduce the first 30% food-contact PCR bag for potatoes.
A similar collaboration with D’Arrigo Bros. of California resulted in the adoption of PCR bags across its entire product line, including romaine lettuce hearts and iceberg lettuce. Emerald Packaging says that the 30% food contact PCR bags have eliminated over 600,000 pounds of virgin plastic from the supply chain.
Advocating for PCR
Emerald Packaging notes that integrating PCR materials can divert plastic waste from landfills and reduce carbon emissions produced from virgin plastic production.
Emerald Packaging is the largest manufacturer of plastic packaging for fresh produce in the US. Recently, it helped shape legislation in California that addresses the need for a more robust recycling infrastructure.
