Eviosys markets peelable foil can closure for reduced emissions and food waste

04 Jul 2023 --- Eviosys has launched a food can with a peelable foil directly sealed on the body of the can, branded Ecopeel. The solution is said to reduce the carbon footprint of canned food items by up to 20%. 

The Ecopeel design intends to help businesses achieve their environmental sustainability objectives, driving the move away from plastic and enhancing inclusivity, convenience and branding opportunities for customers and end-users. 

The solution, an “industry-first,” replaces the traditional ring-pull with foil and is notably lighter. 

“Ecopeel seals the can with foil via Direct Heat Seal Technology, which makes the customers’ filling process five times faster, cleaner and safer, reducing spoilage and energy usage. Having a more peelable closure means consumers have greater access to the can for full aperture, so the contents are more accessible and can all be fully removed, reducing food waste,” Tomas Lopez, CEO at Eviosys, tells Packaging Insights. 

Ecopeel replaces the traditional ring-pull with foil and is notably lighter. “The can is also designed with a smooth body which allows for full product release unhindered by any extra materials around the opening, ensuring easier, more efficient use.”

Ecopeel’s “unique” 45 degrees sealing surface reduces the force necessary for opening. This supports Eviosys’ mission to make switching to metal accessible to all, building on the company’s success in other products, such as its opening torque-reducing Orbit closures.

Can convenience 
Ecopeel is designed to reduce customer complexity as cans are delivered with the foil already sealed, simply requiring brands to fill and seam the can. It is also marketed as a cleaner and safer process, reducing spoilage and energy usage. 

It also offers greater customization options with printing onto the can, so products stand out on the shelf.

Working in collaboration with customers, such as Jealsa and Friscos, Eviosys is also in discussions with other customers across Europe for the rollout of Ecopeel and to expand the range to other sectors including pâté, pet food and olives.

Cans and food waste
Metal cans are praised for their shelf life extending qualities, reducing food waste and carbon emissions.

Packaging Insights previously spoke to Robert Fell, director and chief executive at the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association, about food waste being a bigger environmental issue than packaging. He supports that effective packaging avoids more carbon than it requires to manufacture by prolonging the shelf life of food and protecting items from damage.

In recent launches, Henkel marketed a low-carbon beverage can cleaner in response to growing demands for recyclability propelling the use of aluminum.
