FachPack 2019: Sappi to exhibit expanded paper range to replace PE-coating
04 Sep 2019 --- Sappi has expanded its range of sustainable packaging papers to include options with integrated heat sealing and barrier functions. Coined Sappi Seal and Sappi Guard, the extended range will take center stage for the company at Fachpack, held in Nuremberg, Germany, this month. The expanded range debuted a few months ago and is now available worldwide.
“Sappi’s customers ask for innovative functional papers offering both ecological and economic advantages and the reduction of fossil-based raw materials. Regarding Sappi Seal, the feedback from the market has been extremely positive. Close to a hundred inquiries have been received since the launch of the paper a few months ago and a number of different projects are currently underway,” a company spokesperson tells PackagingInsights.
The latest product, Sappi Seal, is a packaging paper with integrated heat sealability implemented as a dispersion coating on the reverse side. It is touted as being able to replace paper packages with PE coating, as well as having an effective moisture barrier against water vapor. Sappi Seal also guarantees impressive printing results, notes the company, and is suitable for a range of food and non-food applications – including tea and sugar.

Sappi has also optimized its Guard family of products to deliver better food protection. Depending on the requirements of the product to be packaged, the Guard paper family offers a range of solutions. These vary from barrier properties against grease, oxygen, water vapor, mineral oil and aroma. Heat sealability is also available, as well as recyclability in the paper-waste stream.
Sappi will be demonstrating this collaborative capability at its stand at the show with various application examples, including cereal packaging, tea and confectionery.
Also at this year’s Fachpack will be Mondi. It will be showcasing its collaborative approach with customers that creates tailor-made packaging solutions that are sustainable by design. Optimizing the material used for packaging is part of Mondi’s framework – paper where possible, plastic when useful.
Meanwhile, Sudpack will be showcasing packaging concepts that center on a “reduce, recycle and replace” model of sustainability without compromising product safety. Notable exhibits will include films from the high-performance Multipeel series that use significantly less material while still delivering optimal protection for sensitive products. Also on show will be the xpect series, which uses renewable materials while prioritizing protection.
