Fasten supports circular economy for cosmetics with refillable packaging system
29 Jun 2022 --- Fasten is introducing the Recharge Luxury Refill system: a line of environmentally sustainable, refillable cosmetic packaging for makeup and skincare products aimed at supporting the circular economy. The range is available in 30 ml and 100 ml containers that are fully constructed of PP and PET.
According to Innova Market Insights, 33% of global consumers believe reusable or refillable is the most environmentally sustainable packaging type, followed by recyclable (21%).
Combining refillability and recyclability in its Recharge Luxury Refill system, Ilja Zutt, managing director of Fasten explains that “design and engineering teams are constantly on the lookout for new techniques, innovative materials and sustainable solutions, while collectively working toward translating new trends and ideas into unique packaging concepts.”
Responsibility to reuse
Fasten, part of the IBG group, provides innovative beauty packaging and aims to create environmentally sustainable packaging options for cosmetic products. According to IGB’s sustainability report, the company has the corporate responsibility to “integrate the principles of the circular economy into the core of our business.”
Furthermore, the company explains that it has “chosen to make all our packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025, a major challenge that mobilizes our innovation and marketing teams.”
“The Recharge Luxury Refill is a result of this steadfast effort and one we are confident introducing to the market, with demand for conscious beauty at an all-time high,” Zutt says.

The design features a clear outside frame with a bottomless design rather than a full outer container, which results in a significant reduction in weight, reduced material waste, and full visibility of the refill.
As the containers are made of PP and PET, they are recyclable and their recycled granulates can be incorporated back into industrial environments. Interestingly, the design also features the first cosmetic pump made entirely of PP on the market.
The lightweight inner refill container has a simple click-in system and a pre-assembled PP dip tube that guards against cross-contamination during refilling.
The absence of glue, the opportunity to add a debossed logo rather than inked decoration, and a little mushroom blister on the shell are more environmentally-friendly characteristics.
Alternatively adequate packaging
In other news, MOB Beauty, a makeup brand aiming to reduce plastic waste in the industry, launched a fully compostable makeup packaging collection called NewPurpose.
According to MOB, the beauty industry generates an estimated 120 billion cosmetic packages every year. To tackle the waste issue, MOB’s team developed NewPurpose within three years.
The collection is made of fully compostable molded fiber. The finalized product is a combination of natural bamboo, bagasse and 100% PCR cardboard coated in verdecoat, which is a protective spray used to coat food packaging to offer extra durability and water resistance.
