Food to go market: Færch Plast UK launches 100 percent recycled material containers
29 Oct 2018 --- Færch Plast UK is set to launch its 100 percent recycled PET material into its Food to Go product range early next year. The move comes as a result of the company’s recent acquisition of the 4PET Group and builds on its commitment to the UK Plastics Pact.
From early next year, the product will be available on the market – thereby reducing the need to use virgin materials.
The launch follows the announcement from earlier this year of Færch Plast’s acquisition of the 4PET Group. This move hoped to help the company close the loop on plastic food trays. With this acquisition, Færch became one of the world’s first integrated plastic packaging suppliers that achieves a circular economy for recycling food trays on an industrial scale, turning plastic packaging into a resource, according to the company.
“For years, Færch has been promoting sustainability, and all of our products are designed for recyclability. The acquisition of 4PET Group is an outstanding opportunity for us to close the loop and a leapfrog in terms of sustainability. With the modern infrastructure in place at 4PET to sort and process disposed plastic trays, we are able to transform used trays into raw material for new food contact products”, says Færch Plast Group’s CEO, Lars Gade Hansen.
The launch of the new material is a great innovation, notes Mark Tollman, Sales Director of Faerch Plast UK & Ireland. “This innovation is a further commitment to the UK Plastics Pact, which we are proud to be a founding member of.”
Færch Plast’s Ely plant is a state of the art manufacturing operation producing recycled plastic packaging for the UK and European markets. The site extrudes its own sheet using UK sourced materials and has benefitted from a US$23 million (£20 million) investment program over the last two years.
Færch manufacturing facilities are 100 percent powered by electricity from renewable sources and are part of Operation Clean Sweep to ensure zero plastic pellet loss during transport and production to contribute to clean oceans.
The UK Plastics Pact currently has 67 business members – including major players such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrison’s – representing retail, manufacturing, hospitality, the plastic supply sector, plastic recycling and resource management.
