The food industry has come a long way in making life easier for people with allergies. From food manufacturers producing specific free-from foods such as healthy cakes, dairy free cakes, organic cakes, and even vegan birthday cakes to new food packaging legislations, life has never been easier for those with dietary requirements.
Food shopping will soon become much easier for people suffering from food allergies. It was revealed that the government will be enforcing new rules for the food production industry to follow; from now on if a food item contains potential allergens it must clearly be marked on the packet so that it is easy to read. Until now people with food allergies simply had to avoid the foods they knew would make them ill.
One food manufacturer producing gluten free foods said; "If you have an anaphylactic allergy, you could end up in the hospital and you can even die, so that one ingredient that wasn't declared because it was in spices could end up in a trip to emergency"
Under the existing food labelling regulations, the ingredients within food items must be listed, but their components do not have to be declared. This means that ‘seasoning’ may be listed on a packets list of ingredients, but each individual spice that it contains does not.
All companies producing food have up to a year and a half to make the appropriate changes to their packaging- which will make a trip to the supermarket a much easier experience for those suffering from allergies. The top ten potential allergens include nuts, milk, eggs, shellfish, sulphites and gluten.
This change in legislation is yet another step in the right direction for making life easier for allergy sufferers.
