Iconic Symbols Created By Atlas For Annual British Cheese Awards
Atlas Packaging is to mark the occasion of the annual British Cheese Awards by unveiling two hand-made creations based on two iconic British symbols - a telephone box and a post box.
The structures have been hand-crafted by Atlas’s structural design team from corrugated board - a material on which Atlas has built its business. Their purpose is to celebrate expertise and heritage in the British cheesemaking industry, as well as herald the advent of the annual Royal Bath & West Show where the British Cheese Awards are held – a quintessentially British agricultural show which has been in existence for some 153 years.
Rachael Hann, Organiser of the British Cheese Awards commented on the structures. ‘We wanted to invite Atlas, one of our sponsors, to create something that would really add the wow factor to the Pavilion where the cheeses are on display to the general public for the duration of the Show, as well as to contribute to the very Britishness of the whole occasion – particular in the year when The Queen celebrates her ninetieth birthday.’
The structures are also designed to demonstrate to cheesemakers, an industry which Atlas has been supplying for many years, the enormous flexibility and capability of this humble material.
The designs for the structures were masterminded by Liam Gregory, who started his working life on the factory floor at Atlas Packaging two and a half years ago but who hankered after a more creative role. Atlas, who takes a real pride in nurturing its staff, gave him a position with the design team where he was mentored by the head of the design department and is now originating some of the team’s most innovative packaging designs.
Liam commented on the challenges faced during the design and build of the structures: “At first it seemed a bit daunting but once I started to jot some ideas down on paper, it started to take shape. I did hit a few speed bumps along the way, but it was nothing we weren’t able to overcome. In fact it’s the Team’s policy to tackle obstacles head on, get round them by thinking outside the cardboard box, and come up with a solution that fulfils the brief!‘
The structures will be on display in the cheese pavilion at the British Cheese Awards which takes place at the Bath & West from 1st to 4th June.
