Kenya has announced to build 53 cooling plants to increase storing capacity and to add value to milk under a three-year plan.
Country Livestock Development assistant minister Danson Maanzo said the plants will be owned by county governments as part of their mandate to enhance the value of co-operatives run by farmers.
Although the government is still assessing where the coolers will be located, Maanzo said areas which consistently produce more than 100,000 liters of milk per day will be front-runners.
The areas should also have a co-operative society with a track record of profitability.
Murang'a, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Embu, Meru, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Bomet counties fulfill the conditions and expected to be benefited from the coolers.
"These are the areas where daily milk production has surpassed 100,000 liters and in some of them, there will be established more than two cooling plants," he said.
