Mondi replaces glassine-based release liners with responsibly sourced base paper
16 May 2022 --- Mondi has switched its portfolio of glassine-based release liners to certified base paper, supporting the harvesting of wood from responsibly managed forests. Glassine-based release liners are mainly used for labels, tapes, and medical applications.
The company says it collaborates with certification schemes like PEFC to enable traceability and compliance in wood harvesting.
Zero deforestation agenda
The paper and packaging giant says it is improving traceability by moving to certified base paper. It is working with partners who manage forests responsibly in line with its commitment to maintain zero deforestation in its forests and supply chain.
The change is part of Mondi’s ongoing, “proactive” approach to environmental sustainability, which includes developing solutions that are better for the environment. The move also represents another step in Mondi’s commitment to responsible sourcing and supply chain transparency.
Mondi’s collaboration with partners, known as its EcoSolutions approach, means that it will continue to develop “the most environmentally sustainable packaging solutions” to support customers in achieving their environmental sustainability goals.
FSC certification
Mondi already works with a number of certification bodies to help increase the availability of certified wood fiber in its key wood sourcing markets in Europe.
The company highlights that all of its pulp and paper mills are PEFC or FSC certified, 100% of its own forests are certified and 76% of externally sourced wood and 100% of sourced pulp is from certified sources.
“As part of our MAP2030 ambitions, we commit to taking action on climate change, and setting an example for others working in international manufacturing, production and logistics to help them make sustainability a key priority,” says Stefan Schönberger, head of product sustainability release liner at Mondi.
“Offering certified base paper is part of this. It is the first step to upgrading our entire release liner portfolio, which will manage our impacts while providing the best possible solutions for the customer and the end consumer.”
Last month, Mondi unveiled two recyclable trays for fresh food at Anuga FoodTec 2022 in Cologne, Germany. The paper-based tray and semi-rigid plastic trays are designed to reduce food waste.
Also, at Anuga FoodTec, PackagingInsights spoke with Falk Paulsen, sales and business development director at Mondi Functional Paper & Films about the rising demand for paper-based packaging from customers and consumers.
Paulsen spotlighted some of the company’s latest paper-based innovations for food items and touched on the paper-based transition’s potential and current limitations.
