New BERICAP Neck Finish According to New ISBT's PCO 1881
BERICAP designed such new neck according to new PCO 1881 standard with considerations to high productivity and quality of preform production and of blowing operations, to correct handling and capping on filling lines and to safe use of it at consumer level.
08/12/06 BERICAP is ready for the new 28 mm light weight neck finish ISBT standard (called PCO 1881) with its new range of SuperShorty closures for CSD and beer, offering the opportunity of significant savings on raw material on PET bottles and closures for beverage fillers.
Beginning of November 2006 the ISBT (International Society of Beverage Technologists) agreed on a new light weight standard for 28mm neck finish called PCO 1881, which provides a weight saving of 1,3 g (26%) compared to current PCO 28 (3.74 g vs. 5.05 g) and of 2,5 g (40%) compared to BPF neck finish.
BERICAP designed such new neck according to new PCO 1881 standard with considerations to high productivity and quality of preform production and of blowing operations, to correct handling and capping on filling lines and to safe use of it at consumer level, i.e. mainly avoiding any blow off hazard at opening.
In particular, it includes good venting capability due to sufficient thread length (650° thread travel, extendable to 680°) and adequate positioning of vertical slots across the threads ; and efficient closure tamper-evident (TE) band functioning due to special TE bead profile.
BERICAP offers for such PCO 1881 neck a range of two 1-piece closures that are injection moulded from organoleptic HDPE resins, incorporate the well-proven DoubleSeal sealing system and feature interrupted threads for efficient venting and additional light weighting, and slitted TE band with flexible wings (FLEXBAND) for easier application and efficient break at opening.
Those are:
• SuperShorty with CDS style at 2,40 g for CSD, beer, carbonated water, etc…
• SuperShorty with crown style at 2,60 g, more specifically for beer
Both of them can contain in-shell moulded oxygen scavenger O2S for oxygen
sensitive beverages.
On-going physical performance tests have been showing that the TM closures passed the following:
• opening torque between 10 and 15 inch.lbs
• strip torque above the limits of COCA COLA and PEPSICO (25 inch.lbs)
• SST up to 11 bars at ambient temperature and up to 7 bar at 38°C
• no blow off for bottles up to 1,5 l (blow off performances for bottles up to 2 l under evaluation)
• hot route vending test of PEPSICO passed as well as pasteurisation trial at a beer bottler
• promising on-going evaluations for CO2 retention at standard and elevated
temperature and under top load
• final performance evaluation after line trial foreseen shortly
Overall, this new PCO 1881 neck finish and BERICAP SuperShorty combination offers a tremendous opportunity for resin cost savings on neck finish and closure, above 2 million Euros for every 1 billion closures used, of high interest in this period of high and durable raises of resin prices.
