Store brand products maker Perrigo Co. unveiled a new plastic packaging tub that is intended to help parents provide their infants with more accurate and hygienic feedings with less mess.
Perrigo Nutritionals, the infant formula business of Allegan-based Perrigo Co., introduced its new SmarTub packaging, which has granted patents and patents pending.
The Nutritionals business supplies mass retailers, supermarkets and drugstores with infant formulas that are sold under those retailers’ brand names.
“We believe we have advanced infant formula packaging with novelties that will transform the overall user experience for parents,” Scott Kamison, general manager of Perrigo Nutritionals, said in a press release.
“This undertaking began with extensive competitive analysis and consumer research, and culminated with the addition of a new state-of-the-art packaging line at our ISO 9001:2008-certified facility in Vermont.”
He said the company invested $29 million and it's product development team invested three years of work on the packaging product.
“The result is an innovative package on the outside with the same trusted formula on the inside,” he said.
The new packaging includes: "AccuMeasure," a scoop leveler for more accurate feedings; "CleanPull" technology, which allows a foil liner to easily be removed with one pull; "SimpleSlide," a scoop storage for less mess; a longer scoop handle for more hygienic scooping; and anti-theft tag technology to prevent products from being stolen from stores.
The manufacturing facility in northwestern Vermont, which was formerly owned by Wyeth and PBM Nutritionals, has been producing infant formula for more than 25 years and manufactures infant formula 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Perrigo Nutritionals produces 11 formulas that are sold by more than 68 retailer chains including Walmart, Sam’s Club, Target, Kroger, Babies R’ Us, and other U.S. retailers.
Perrigo manufactures and distributes over-the-counter and generic prescription pharmaceuticals, infant formulas, nutritional products and dietary supplements. It also produces active pharmaceutical ingredients used by other drug makers.
The company has about 9,000 workers worldwide, including about 4,000 in Allegan County.
