13/03/08 Recently in England, a great deal of attention was focused on Polinas Plastics, the largest polypropylene film producer in Turkey, due to the invention of a new biodegradable packaging material.
Polinas, one of Ulker Group’s companies, has made innovative biodegradable packaging films. They were developed entirely by Turkish engineers in the R&D Department of Polinas. The product vanishes through a state-of-art chemical reaction when it comes in contact with soil. Levent Sipahi, Deputy General Manager of Polinas, says, “We consider this to be a very important step for the environment and the protection of nature.”
He mentions that Polinas has developed a polypropylene packaging film, which features biodegrading technology, adding “The packages made of the ‘poligreen’ material –as they name it - are decomposed into water, carbon-dioxide, and bio-mass by being digested by micro-organisms within two years. Polinas has emerged as of the first producers of this technology. During the initial promotion, the product succeeded in England, which is pioneering in environment-friendly technologies. Giant English retail chains, such as Tesco, Asda, and other large-scale packaging producers showed great interest in this novelty.”
General Manager Bulent Atabay emphasizes that films containing biodegradable material cost 35 to 40% more than conventional films. “Projects are being carried out for these films to be used in Ulker products packaging.”
The company has accumulated 40% of their $165 million revenue last year from exports.
