Reading Bakery launches single system for multiple snack applications
North American equipment firm Reading Bakery Systems has introduced a snack processing machine capable of handling multiple sheet snack varieties, which it claims cuts costs for manufacturers and allows flexibility.
North American equipment firm Reading Bakery Systems has introduced a snack processing machine capable of handling multiple sheet snack varieties, which it claims cuts costs for manufacturers and allows flexibility.
The company’s Multi-Crisp Baked Snack System can produce producing potato, wheat and corn masa flour-based snack.
The machine has only one continuous mixer feeding production line, so can only produce one product at a time. However, a newly designed FX Continuous Mixer allows the mixing of different kinds of dough.

Dulcinea Freymoyer, manager of marketing services at Reading Bakery said: “The systems we offer are very large, high production systems and are a very big investment.”
“With the flexibility to produce multiple different products on one system, the customer only has to purchase one flexible system instead of one system for each separate product.”
Freymoyer added that the system gave larger manufacturers the option to test a new product with a different dough type.
“But for a smaller producer, or a producer that wants to produce a variety of products, the flexibility to produce multiple products is very important. They can have different product offerings to the consumer, but only have to invest in one production system,” she said.
Capacity and features
The Multi-Crisp Baked Snack System can produce 250-1,000 kg/hr of finished product, depending on the number of oven zones.
Reading Bakery claims that the machine uses a streamlined continuous mixing process that reduces times between the mixer and 2-roll sheeter, thus eliminating batch cycle variations and creating consistent textures.
How it works
First, the 2-roll sheeter turns the chosen dough into a continuous dough sheet. This long dough sheet is discharged straight onto a rotary cutter that separates the dough into desired shapes.
Reading Bakery said that the rotary cutter can be fitted with two die rolls for easier changeovers between product types or sizes.
Finally, a two-pass convection Spectrum Oven bakes the product, ready for seasoning and packaging. An optional forming belt is available to form the crisps or chips while they bake in the oven.
