Serac patented an RABS (Restricted Access Barrier System) type isolator in February 2005 that was directly inspired from recent developments in the pharmaceutical industry; this information was compiled in an ISPE, for the FDA, white paper.
The RABS type isolator is a modern aseptic system that offers the filling area the advantages both of an airtight isolator and of a unidirectional flow. This technique was first developed by the pharmaceutical industry to counter the inconveniences of conventional isolators.
The RABS type isolator that Serac has developed provides active protection with positive overpressure. Thanks to the unidirectional air flow and overpressure that prevent outside elements (1) from penetrating the system, this type of isolator offers a good ventilation of the Iso 5 classified sterile area. Iso 6 classified barrier areas surround these sterile areas (2). They act as specific access areas that allow the operator to intervene rapidly without risking contamination by the use of glove-boxes (3).
The RABS type isolator is available on the new SAS3 (Serac Aseptic System 3rd generation) lines for rates up to 50 000 BPH. Finally, Serac is the only company to offer systems for sterile blown bottles, for bottles that are APA full-filled or injected or decontaminated by gaseous H202 and Serac does this according to each application’s specific needs.
The RABS type isolator has been available to clients since late 2005. It will of course be the star on the Serac stand at Anuga Foodtec in Cologne from the 4th to the 7th of April 2006 (Serac Stand: Hall 7 - F 021)
