SIG provides FSC-certified carton packaging for NotCo’s latest launches
28 Feb 2023 --- Food tech company NotCo is partnering with SIG to expand its product portfolio with renewable aseptic carton packaging for two new product launches – NotCreme and NotMilk High Protein.
“With our agile and flexible filling system, we are able to offer high flexibility combined with speed. Our customers can respond efficiently to any trends that are shaping the market,” says Renata Kasahara, head of marketing America South at SIG.
“Both NotCo and SIG are strongly committed to sustainable innovation and constantly looking for solutions that cut the environmental impact of food and beverage packaging even further.”
NotMilk High Protein products are filled in SIG’s combismile 250 mL aseptic carton packs. The combismile carton pack offers a convenient drinking experience with its curved, modern shape and easy-grip corners.
The carton packs are easy to use on the go and are designed to stand out on retail shelves. NotCreme is available in combiblocMini 200 mL.
“SIG’s high-speed filling lines are highly flexible with waste rates of less than 0.5% and offer high productivity – aspects that contribute to the sustainability strategies of both companies,” the packaging solutions provider shares.
Beverage packaging
SIG’s combismile is made from renewable materials, including FSC-certified processed wood fibers, to produce the raw paper board. The cartons are 100% recyclable in the US.
“The unique shape of the carton and ‘smile’ feature are formed directly within the filling machine. Each combismile filling machine has a maximum output of 24,000 packs an hour and comes with benefits such as high-speed performance and volume flexibility, added by the spout and straw applicators,” SIG details.
According to Innova Market Insights, F&B product launches that feature either a biodegradable or compostable claim have almost tripled since 2018, with categories such as tea, coffee and confectionery accounting for nearly half these launches.
The renewable packaging trend was revealed as one of the top five packaging trends of 2023. The market researcher says it is set to continue amid growing consumer support. Only 7% of global consumers perceive paper-based packaging as unsustainable, while only 6% consider bioplastics unsustainable.
CombiblocMini packaging is suitable for filling liquid dairy products and non-carbonated soft drinks. It is also ideal for on-the-go format requirements.
Recyclability and renewability
Last December, SIG injected US$10 million in recycling technology to enable polymers and aluminum from used aseptic carton packs to be recovered and sold separately for the “first” time on an industrial scale in Brazil.
SIG invested in technology to create a broader market for recycled materials as a significant step in increasing recycling rates for used aseptic cartons. By expanding its range of applications for recycled materials from used aseptic cartons, SIG expected to increase its company value by more than 50%.
According to the beverage carton recycling guideline The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE) released in October, all packaging elements must be recycled. Beverage cartons already have a recycling rate of 51% of all cartons sold in Europe, with countries such as Belgium and Germany achieving over 70%, ACE shared.
Even though cartons have a high recyclability rate compared to other containers, ACE still wants to optimize the process for improved circularity.
