Slash costs, boost sustainability: Tetra Pak and ABB launch energy assessment program

01 Apr 2019 --- A digital energy assessment program aimed at supporting food producers in reducing their environmental impact and cut production costs is to be developed by Tetra Pak and Swiss tech company ABB. The collaboration will build on Tetra Pak’s expertise in food manufacturing and both companies’ global installed base and digital transformation expertise. Based on pilot projects implemented in North and South America, the program could help reduce carbon emissions for food and beverage manufacturing and cut energy costs by 15 to 25 percent.

“There is a sense of urgency for all industries to reduce their environmental impact across their operations, and we are developing programs together with our partners to reduce this impact for our customers and the overall industry,” says Johan Nilsson, Vice President at Tetra Pak. 

The assessment program will be presented at the Swedish Pavilion at Hannover Messe 2019 this week (April 1-5).

The digital energy assessment program can analyze the potential of an entire plant and suggest better environmental practices while simultaneously boosting profits. In line with the analysis, Tetra Pak will offer recommendations on opportunities to reduce energy consumption and help food manufacturers make informed decisions on how resources are used in their plants.

“The plant assessment program is an excellent example of an area where we have found and created opportunities for environmental savings,” Nilsson notes.

Via the collaboration, Tetra Pak and ABB will create and drive a manufacturing ecosystem to provide Tetra Pak’s customers with the most advanced digital solutions and services, according to Visar Krasniqi, Group Vice President, Digital Transformation at ABB. 

“This will enable Tetra Pak’s customers to run ABB’s digital solutions and their operations with improved overall efficiency, flexibility and sustainability,” he adds.

The launch builds on Tetra Pak’s plans to unveil a “factory of the future,” in which digital technology is used to revolutionize the way food manufacturing plants operate. 

Within this futuristic model, machines will be able to communicate with each other as well as with the digital systems of the entire operation. The plant will enable tasks to be completed automatically, as well as diagnosing problems, ordering and delivering parts and finding an engineer who is most suitable for the service needed. The full system will also be presented at Hannover Messe 2019.
