Südpack nabs PackTheFuture Award for resealable and recyclable Multipeel PurePP film
26 May 2020 --- Südpack has been awarded the PackTheFuture Award in the “Save Food” category for its resealable Multipeel PurePP film solution. Multipeel PurePP film combines enhanced product protection and convenience with a certified 95 percent recyclability at modern recycling facilities. The Multipeel PurePP is part of Südpack’s new Pure line, designed for meat, dairy, confectionery and snack products.
The prize is jointly awarded by ELIPSO, the French association for plastic and flexible packaging, and Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen, the German industry association for plastic packaging.
The essential contribution of plastic packaging to food safety and shelf life is especially apparent during the current COVID-19 pandemic, Südpack affirms. For this reason, the PackTheFuture Award recognizes plastic packaging like the Multipeel PurePP solution that meets these needs, including product protection and environmental sustainability.
“[The Multipeel PurePP solution] is an excellent example of food packaging that is both recyclable and sustainable thanks to its reduced weight, while also offering product protection and resealability,” the jury concluded, thus nominating the Südpack solution as the winner out of 58 entries in the “Save Food” category.
“We are very proud of this award,” notes Erik Bouts, spokesperson for the management board of Südpack. “It shows that we are on the right track with our efforts to develop particularly sustainable, yet highly efficient packaging films.”
Recyclability and material reduction are identified as important fields in Südpack’s Roadmap for Sustainable Film Packaging. Multipeel PurePP, which is made of polypropylene (PP), sets standards in these two areas: The renowned Institute cyclos-HTP certifies that the material has high recyclability of 95 percent. The evaluation is based on how well the entire packaging, including bottom and top film, can be recycled at modern recycling plants.
Every solution in the Pure line portfolio is made of PP material and therefore “particularly easy to recycle.” In addition to Multipeel PurePP, the Pure line also comprises the Multifol PurePP flexible film and the Flow Pack PurePP flow wrapping solution. The use of mono-material in these solutions does not lead to a loss of product protection or convenience for any of the Pure line products, Südpack confirms.
The Multipeel PurePP seals reliably and is particularly suitable for dairy and meat products, as well as confectionery, snacks and even technical products. Thanks to its resealable closing feature, consumers can easily portion fresh products without having to decant them into other containers for safe storage.
In November, PackagingInsights spoke to Carolin Grimbacher, Managing Partner and Head of Research and Development for Südpack, about the progress in the company’s three-pronged strategy to reduce, recycle and replace plastic packaging, its innovations in renewable raw materials and its participation in the ChemCycling project.
