TerraCycle enlists Tupperware as first reusable plastic container brand on Loop zero-waste platform
23 Nov 2020 --- TerraCycle’s circular reuse platform Loop is partnering with Tupperware Brands to offer consumers the option of purchasing products packaged in reusable Tupperware containers.
The partnership intends to launch in 2021 and will be initially available to consumers across the US.
“By teaming up with Loop, we are excited to use our knowledge in product design and reusability to contribute to the circular recycling model,” says Patricio Cuesta, president of commercial worldwide at Tupperware Brands.
“This partnership also allows us to learn more on how to address single-use plastic in the packaging of our own products to make it more sustainable for the future.”
“We look forward to teaming up with other brands to collectively work to nurture a better future for our planet and communities by finding solutions to reduce waste across consumer touchpoints.”
No Time to Waste
Aligned in the collective mission to reduce waste through a circular system, the collaboration will provide a new packaging offering for Loop. In addition, it will advance Tupperware’s No Time to Waste initiative to significantly reduce single-use plastic and food waste by 2025.
Tupperware is the first reusable plastic container brand partner for Loop, adding to the platform’s catalog of reusable glass and metal containers.
Tupperware boasts the strength, resilience and lightweight characteristics of reusable plastic solutions, as well as experience and knowledge in engineered resin and sustainable plastics technology.
The solutions allow Loop’s brand partners to access enhanced options to package, store and ship products to US consumers through collaboration with Tupperware.
“Tupperware is more than qualified to be our first plastics container brand partner,” says TerraCycle and Loop CEO Tom Szaky.
“The company’s long heritage and knowledge in durable, reusable product development make them a valuable resource to our partners who are looking to improve the design and functionality of their packaging.”
Advancing circularity
The partnership with Loop marks Tupperware’s latest commitment to advancing the circular economy. Tupperware has partnered with key circular economy organizations, signing to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) New Plastics Economy Global Commitment.
Moreover, it sponsored organizations like the National Park Foundation to educate park visitors about the benefits of using reusable, functional products to support waste-free adventures.
Tupperware has also expanded its ECO+ material line by testing bio-based material as an addition to its circular polymer portfolio.
Loop continues expansion
Previously, many major brands have joined Loop’s initiative to promote circularity. McDonald’s is testing a reusable cup model for hot beverages. The initiative will be trialed in 2021 across select McDonald’s restaurants in the UK, allowing customers to reduce waste by choosing a durable Loop-created cup for a small deposit.
Likewise, Burger King is trialing a new reusable packaging model to help cut down on packaging waste in the US cities of New York City and Portland, and in Tokyo, Japan, starting in 2021,
In the same spirit, PepsiCo are offering Parisian consumers two of their brands, Tropicana Orange Juice and Quaker Cruesli Chocolat Noir, in reusable containers, as part of a market trial of the Loop platform.
Recently, Open Farm Pet Food partnered with Loop as the first pet food participant.
