UK-based supermarket chain Tesco has launched its first light-weight Champagne bottles, as part of its drive towards sustainability.
The light-weight bottle initiative was led by Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC). The bottles will see 7.2% less weight than standard 75cl Champagne bottles, a reduction from 900g to 830g.
The conversion will help to reduce glass waste, cut carbon emissions and lower transportation costs. The company's De Vallois Champagne will take the lead, followed by the rest of its range over the next few years.
Tesco Beers, Wines and Spirits division category technical manager Andrew Gale said the company is fully committed to reducing glass waste across its entire drinks portfolio and is working closely with its suppliers and the wider industry to deliver significant CO2 reductions throughout its supply chain.
"We are confident that the Tesco shoppers will respond positively to the move," Gale added.
