Texen swoops for PRP Creation’s flexible packaging business to boost beauty pouch portfolio
02 Feb 2022 --- Texen, a company specializing in multi-material packaging for the luxury and beauty industry, has acquired PRP Creation’s flexible packaging business for pouches and doypacks. PRP Creations manufactures plastic packaging for high-end clients like Chanel, Estée Lauder, L’Oréal and Shiseido.
Texen aims to be a significant player in environmentally sustainable beauty packaging, while PRP Creation is broadening its market by offering more sustainable innovations. Financial details of this deal have not been disclosed.
“We are at a key period where Texen is requested to speed its eco transition of beauty packaging,” Rémi Weidenmann, executive director at Texen, tells PersonalCareInsights.
“EcoDesign is an area without any limit. There will be new developments year after year. It’s not a question of lack of alternatives [for eco packaging], but a question of speed. Collectively we need to move faster and stronger.”
With its expertise in research and development, Texen has been pursuing developments in flexible distribution systems. These developments will lead to various eco-packaging opportunities within beauty segments like cosmetics, skincare and fragrance, it says.
Sustainability underlies Texen’s 2025 strategy. The business deal complements CSR initiatives such as “sustainable material and decoration, refillable technology and design, and less or no plastic packaging,” informs Rémi.
Refill systems
Additionally, cosmetic packaging will have an increased shelf life by implementing refill systems for pouches. The longer shelf life will lead to the reduced use of raw materials.
Finally, cosmetics packaging can be produced through recycled materials, such as PP/PE mono-material.
“The combination of our different areas of expertise, as well as Texen’s global presence, represent a major growth opportunity for this value proposition, which offers significant eco-design benefits,” emphasizes Rémi.
“Possibilities and opportunities [to fulfill ecological ambitions] are high but need to be identified and tested,” adds Rémi.
Texen intends to identify opportunities and check compatibility with beauty constraints “to assess the industrial scalability which can be tricky sometimes. Here all the experience of Texen is required including a high asset,” continues Rémi.
The demand for environmentally sustainable and aesthetic beauty packaging continues to be recognized.
Strategic business opportunities
Both companies will gain opportunities in the luxury and beauty packaging sector. The business deal benefits PRP Creation’s desire to bolster its business, while Texen will upgrade its sustainable innovation capabilities.
The acquisition deal has been in effect since February 1, 2022. Texen’s eco-packaging will be globally available.
“This operation is strategic. It will allow PRP Creation to enter a new growth phase, driven by desirable, sustainable innovation,” expresses Joël Viry, president of PRP Creation.
“Acquisition of PRP Creation flexible packaging activities by Texen will speed up the development” toward eco-friendly packaging through “refillablity, natural formulation (airless), display performance (airless) and less plastic packaging,” explains Rémi.
Beauty company Maybelline has also recently transitioned into sustainable beauty and packaging with its 2030 sustainability program. Additionally, packaging solutions for sun care are soaring with DSM and Albéa’s partnership.
Henkel, L’Oréal, LVMH, Natura &Co and Unilever have urged the industry to develop environmental impact assessments for cosmetic products to amplify transparency. Furthermore, Garnier launched green beauty educational campaigns to promote the benefits of using sustainable ingredients and packaging.
