The Expensive Marmalade Jar

29/09/06 An anniversary to celebrate 125 years of prize-winning marmalade manufacturing, with a special recipe containing the most expensive whisky and exclusive champagne, deserves a fitting jar. So when jam and marmalade maker F Duerrs and Sons approached Rockware Glass, designers from the UK’s leading glass packaging company set about creating the most elegant and expensive looking jar that would contain the world’s most expensive marmalade.

Rockware’s Innovations and NPD Manager, Chris Todd, explains: “We wanted to create a totally unique jar that screamed luxury and celebrated the use of glass as a packaging medium, mixing modern design techniques with traditional glass production methods.”
The result is a crystal glass decanter, elegant, beautiful and simple in its design.

Silversmiths crafted the silver lid and housing on top of the decanter, and the finishing touch was added by hand engraving.

“A most unusual commission but one which we were privileged to work on and proud to be associated with,” says Chris, whose normal task is to create commercial designs for mass volume food and drink brands.

The hand-crafted jar is valued at £1,100. The marmalade is packed with amazing ingredients including gold, vintage champagne and some of the world’s most expensive whisky as well as the finest oranges. The rare Dalmore 62-year-old malt whisky used in the marmalade sells at £32,000 per bottle. It also contains exclusive vintage champagne by Pol Roger, the Cuvee Winston Churchill 1996 supplied by Vineyards of France, which supplies finest wines from a selection of the many thousands of vineyards spread across France. The special jar will be eventually be auctioned for charity on EBay later this year.
