Toppan slashes CO2 emissions in coated paper production by 35% with GL-X-P launch
20 Sep 2021 --- Toppan has developed a barrier coated paper called GL-X-P that provides high water vapor protection and “outstanding” flex resistance for dry food and non-food applications.
GL-X-P’s water vapor barrier prevents content quality deterioration caused by humidity, targeting food loss reduction and freshness preservation.
Meanwhile, its flex resistance makes it suitable for a variety of packaging shapes. In dry food applications, these include instant coffee, powdered beverages, soups, tea leaves, but the paper also has non-food uses, ranging from bath salts, detergents, mechanical parts and some pharmaceuticals.
Global interest in the coated paper is mounting. “We have already received inquiries from all over the world,” Atsushi Kusano from Toppan’s public relations division tells PackagingInsights.
Beginning this month, Toppan will ship GL-X-P samples to manufacturers in a broad spectrum of industries worldwide, including food and toiletries, with full-scale sales scheduled for spring 2022.
GL-X-P expands the GL Barrier portfolio’s applications as a paper-based addition to Toppan’s existing film range, and overcomes the challenge of producing paper-based high barrier packaging.
The solution brings down the plastic content to zero, as GL-X-P consists only of a paper material and a coated layer with heat sealing properties. It eliminates the need to use film or aluminum foil and facilitates packaging design, making use of the unique look and feel of paper, says the company.
Moreover, adopting paper as the base material omits the need for the standard lamination process. Toppan calculates this makes it possible to reduce CO2 emissions by up to approximately 35% compared to conventional products using plastic films.
Toppan is now targeting mass production by next year, aiming to advance development of GL-X-P and continue creating new barrier-coated paper products for packaging.
Star of the show
As physical trade shows become possible again worldwide, Toppan has been busy highlighting a range of its newest packaging solutions.
For example, the company showcased its interactive NFC-enabled packages at Luxe Pack Shanghai 2021 in July, and its ultra-thin-walled injection-molded container at Tokyo Pack 2021.
At AIPIA Asia Summit 2021, Toppan Printing further displayed its expertise in NFC labels, both its high-quality metallic design, as well as interactive tamper-evident paper boxes.
Presenting in the US and Germany, GL-X-P will also be on display at Pack Expo Las Vegas from September 27-29 at the North Hall, N-9409 and at FachPack from September 28-30, at booth 7-107.
