UPM Specialty Papers debuts recyclable fiber-based barrier paper UPM Asendo Pro
25 May 2021 --- UPM Specialty Papers is extending its recyclable packaging paper portfolio with the introduction of an advanced barrier paper, called UPM Asendo Pro.
UPM Asendo Pro is a two-side coated barrier paper made from renewable materials that provides multiple advantages as an easily recyclable monomaterial.
The paper’s print side provides a good basis for high-quality visuals, the company says. Moreover, in addition to advanced grease resistance and good moisture resistance, its mineral oil barrier properties keep products safe.
“It is made of 100 percent wood fibers, which come from sustainably managed forests. Over 90 percent of materials are from renewable sources,” Mika Uusikartano, senior manager, product portfolio management at UPM Specialty Papers, tells PackagingInsights.
“UPM Asendo Pro is recyclable in regular recycling streams and a solution to replace fossil-based packaging materials. It is a combination of advanced barrier properties and printing result for shelf appeal.”
Suitable for foods
UPM Asendo Pro is suitable for dry, greasy and frozen foods, as well as wrappings where excellent print properties are vital, the company says.
End-use purposes for the solution vary from non-food wrapping to food end-uses. The material can be easily converted for additional barrier properties and sealability, which opens up more demanding end-uses.
“We provide sustainable quality products to replace conventional plastic packaging and increase the share of renewable packaging solutions,” says Tommi Heinonen, head of sales EMEA at UPM Specialty Papers.
“UPM Asendo Pro is a cost-effective, durable and safe-to-use recyclable barrier paper that supports even demanding packaging requirements, helps companies reach their sustainability goals and matches regulatory demands.”
Fossil mitigation drives fiber-based growth
The product is the result of a market and end-use-driven holistic process, according to the company.
Over the development period of the innovative barrier paper, UPM worked closely with converters, packaging line manufacturers and brand owners to test the product’s features and receive input and feedback.
The collaborative development process also included optimization of the product’s print performance.
“Collaboration is at the heart of UPM and has also been a key element during this process. The feedback we received from our co-operative partners when developing this new barrier paper was very valuable,” says Janne Varvemaa, director, products and technology at UPM Specialty Papers.
“UPM Asendo Pro is specifically created together with our partners and customers. By listening closely to their wishes and aiming to answer their needs – both functionally and visually – we bring added value to the entire value chain and offer a competitive edge.”
“At UPM Specialty Papers, the push toward a world beyond fossils drives the innovation of better performing, fiber-based packaging solutions,” the company supports
Through co-creation and development, the fiber-based transition impacts the entire packaging value network and offers a huge opportunity for industry innovation.
