Ardagh Metal Packaging is presenting its “Five Times Unique” can range at Drinktec 2025. Gerlof Toenhake, the company’s sales director, tells us more about Ardagh’s digital printing to support brand differentiation and the latest consumer trends in metal packaging.

Good morning.

What can you tell us about Arda's 5 times unique can range and how does it stand out on the market?

I think we have 5 products, and some products are a little bit older and some products are new innovations like the embossing we have already for years, but it stays on.

Customers are requesting it all the time, and I think we are unique in Europe selling these cans.

Digital printing we do together with our daughter Nomoc printing digital cans, bringing brands quicker to the market.

NoOOC stands for no minimum order quantity, so really nice cans, quick to market, serving customers.

We are having the nitro cans.

The nitro can for Fancy products for coffee, for foaming beers like like stout beers we have in the markets and we have the high end, our latest innovation.

Full color printing, mixed ends up to 100 different ends mixed in the package.

And finally our wine can.

We are promoting the wine can.

We are strong in the wine cans.

The market is growing extremely quickly, so we will do a presentation this afternoon on wine cans and how we promote.

We have built a special can for wine.

So that are our 5 focus products that we are extremely proud of.

All right, interesting.

Now you already briefly mentioned digital printing.

Can you tell us more how Ada is using digital printing to support brand differentiation?

Yes, as mentioned, we use it for small labels to introduce quickly into the market, so we're helping new brands to grow their brands first with digital printing quickly in the market, small quantities, and when they grow they can come to our normal production facilities, flexibility, fully digitalized, communication is digitalized.

They hit the market with nice designs, quick to market.

I think it's a perfect fit to our wider industry that we have.

Now, what would you say, which consumer trends are driving your latest metal innovations?

I think there are several.

It's the young generation, very used to cans and they look at smaller portions, less alcohol, differentiation, not drinking the same product every day.

Convenient, easy cooling, easy opening.

So what the beverage can all has, and of course there's still, if you know, the half liter can, the space we can print is as big as an iPad space, so good communication with consumers and all all the things I mentioned.
