Amcor expands pharma packaging capacity in India and Malaysia
Key takeaways
- Amcor invests in Sira, India, and Subang Jaya, Malaysia, expanding healthcare packaging production and introducing advanced technologies.
- The plant in India now features automated vision systems for ophthalmic containers and injectable vials, and operates fully on renewable energy.
- The coating facility in Malaysia enhances regional supply chain, sterile packaging capabilities, and supports local talent development.
Amcor has boosted its healthcare packaging production capacity with a multi-million-dollar investment in its facility in Sira, Karnataka, India, and with a US$35 million investment to open a healthcare packaging coating facility in Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia.
The flexible packaging giant says the ventures reflect a growing demand for pharmaceutical packaging in South and Southeast Asia.
At its plant in India, Amcor introduced advanced manufacturing technologies equipped with fully automated online vision systems to improve the quality and consistency of producing ophthalmic containers, injectable vials, and other high-performance healthcare packaging solutions.
“This addition to our Sira plant reflects our strong progress in building world-class healthcare capabilities in India,” comments Jean-Marc Galvez, chief operating officer of Amcor’s Global Rigids Packaging Solutions division.

“The investment strengthens our strategically located manufacturing network, combining global expertise with local production capabilities to deliver faster response times, reliable supply, and consistently high-quality pharmaceutical packaging for customers across the region.”
Amcor indicates that the enhancements have improved energy efficiency of the plant, which is now fully operated on renewable energy, as certified by the ISCC PLUS standard.
The packager operates three more healthcare packaging plants in India. The facility in Bangalore is focused on equipment and precision manufacturing technologies for the healthcare sector, including ophthalmic and nasal delivery systems, inhalation devices, and components used to deliver injectable medicines.

The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) facilitates the investment with the aim of further strengthening Malaysia’s position as an integrated regional hub for healthcare packaging and enhancing supply chain resilience.
Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, CEO at MIDA, says: “Beyond expanding capacity, this facility strengthens local supply chain resilience, accelerates technology adoption and supports the development of skilled Malaysian talent, in line with the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and our National Investment Aspirations.”
“MIDA will continue to facilitate high-quality investments that generate sustainable, long-term value for Malaysia.”
According to Amcor, by localizing production, it gains dual sourcing options and creates a platform for pilot-to-production scale-up, supporting rapid trials, closer technical collaboration, and faster commercialization for regional customers.
Chris Kenneally, president at Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific, adds: “Today marks an important milestone for Amcor and our partners in Malaysia. The opening of this new coating facility underscores our long-term commitment to supporting our partners in the healthcare sector across the Asia Pacific.
“It also demonstrates the strength of collaboration across our global network in bringing advanced capabilities to the region and serving customers more effectively.”
Last month, Amcor’s Asia Pacific Innovation Center laboratory was accredited by the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment. The green light indicates that a laboratory meets globally recognized requirements for technical competence and quality management.
