Avery Dennison Launches First-Of-A-Kind Sustainable Label

The packaging industry has made a concerted move towards being more eco-friendly and labels are no exception. Testament to this shift towards more sustainable options is Avery Dennison, which has unveiled a first-of-a-kind sustainable label film. The company recently showcased two new bio-based polyethylene label films at Labelexpo Europe 2015.

The packaging industry has made a concerted move towards being more eco-friendly and labels are no exception. Testament to this shift towards more sustainable options is Avery Dennison, which has unveiled a first-of-a-kind sustainable label film. The company recently showcased two new bio-based polyethylene label films at Labelexpo Europe 2015. The films, available in white and clear, are said to be the first self-adhesive PE filmic labels with a face stock that includes more than 80% renewable content. The films are made from Bonsucro Certified Sugar Cane and are said to offer performance and recyclability comparable to standard PE85 resin.

Xander van der Vlies, Sustainability Director at Avery Dennison Materials Group Europe, said: “Economic growth, natural resource scarcity and an increasing demand for goods and services will all contribute to an uncertain supply of finite non-renewable resources in the years to come. With our expanding product range of sustainable label materials – which includes these bio-based PE label films – we can support converters who want to fulfill brand owners’ needs for packaging from renewable resources, while also helping them to provide a differentiating product and drive sales in a fast-growing segment.” Avery Dennison worked with global resin producer Braskem and Belgium converter Desmedt Labels to trial the labels at the Belgium facilities of Ecover, a manufacturer of ecological cleaning products.
