Brand refresh: Tymbark selects SIG’s carton to rejuvenate range

22 Aug 2019 --- Looking to stand-out on the busy market shelf, Central and Eastern European food manufacturer Maspex has reinvented its natural Tymbark fruit juice range with SIG’s combidome carton packaging. The move marks a first for the Polish market. SIG’s carton bottle is fully recyclable and mainly made from FSC-certified paper board.

Carton has become an increasingly popular alternative to plastic throughout the food and beverage industry for its renewable qualities and natural look and feel.

A recent consumer survey conducted by SIG showed a clear preference for combidome, with the carton performing four times better than a competitor carton package. Participants in the survey highlighted the convenient grip and centrally located spout that ensures an outstanding pouring experience – a feature highly valued by consumers.

A further sought-after characteristic of the pack is its sustainable image. According to Carsten Haerup Christensen, Vice President Cluster Europe at SIG, consumers are demanding environmentally friendly products and packaging that is sustainable. “They increasingly want to feel good about the food and drink they buy, and that includes the way it’s packaged. In addition, the demand for transparency and traceability is growing,” he tells PackagingInsights.

Independent life cycle assessments indicate that cartons offer significantly better environmental performance than alternative packaging for a range of products, including long-life food, UHT milk and non-carbonated soft drinks. These results are based on standard beverage cartons that are around 75 percent renewable and SIG already offers customers innovative products that are linked to up to 100 percent renewable content, Christensen adds. 

Complementing combidome

“We want their entire drinking experience to be an enjoyable one, from the healthy juice they drink, to the premium packaging it is consumed from. combidome sets our brand apart, providing excellent on-shelf appeal, ultimate usage convenience and a modern design, using the four display panels to display our ‘love of life’ brand messages in a fun and informative way,” says Bogdan Tyrybon, General Director SCM, VP at Maspex Group.

As the beverage market becomes increasingly busy, suppliers are seeking to stand out through stand out packaging. Creating more convenient or premium products is one thing. Making them authentic and unique is something else. 

“To truly stand out from the crowd, producers can be the first in the market with real product innovation. They can broaden their portfolio and open up new consumer segments. And they can move beyond standard offerings, which in turn will help them reach attractive margin levels. These solutions can help meet the demand for unique products and position brands in a competitive market,” says Christensen.

Market launches grow
In July, B-Better, a water start-up brand from Unilever’s Future Platform, announced it would launch a range of on-trend water beverages in SIG’s aseptic combidome bottle-shaped carton. B-Better is the first company to use combidome with SIGNATURE packaging material, where the polymers are linked to wood-based renewable materials through mass balancing. Added to this is an ultra-thin aluminum foil certified to Aluminum Stewardship Initiative (ASI) standard – a world-first from SIG. 

Dutch fruit drinks manufacturer Riedel also recently opted for the SIGNATURE PACK and SIGNATURE PACK Full Barrier to relaunch its CoolBest range of fruit juices. The Full Barrier option promotes the use of renewable raw materials to save fossil resources, while at the same time substantially reducing impact on the environment. The carton packs in 500, 1,000 and 1,500 ml are mainly composed of FSCcertified paperboard made from wood, a renewable resource. The polymers used to laminate the paperboard have a clear link to 100 percent plant-based material via a mass balance system.
