Campbell’s meal kit packs convenience

Campbell’s Supper Bakes will rollout nationally in July with five packaging components. Each outer paperboard carton contains a 10¾-oz easy-open steel can of baking sauce, a high-density polyethylene/ethylene vinyl acetate-blend pouch of starch mix, and paper/plastic and foil/plastic-laminated tandem packets of seasoning and crumb toppings.

Based in Camden, NJ, Campbell Soup Company representative John Faulkner says, “In the prepared foods category, people are familiar with this type of package. The point of differentiation for us is that baking sauce is included in a can with an easy-open pop-top lid.” The easy-open lids were introduced last year for Campbell’s ready-to-serve soups. “This is the first for our condensed line,” he says. Campbell will not release information on its packaging suppliers. The folding carton is 20-pt SBS, litho-printed in six colors. There is a paperboard sleeve inside the box that separates the can from the other components. “That is to reduce the potential for product damage and deliver some stability,” says Faulkner.
