Eviosys launches as Europe’s largest manufacturer of steel and aluminum food packaging
The new company results from KPS Capital Partners’ acquisition of Crown’s EMEA food and consumer packaging business
01 Sep 2021 --- A new global packaging company called Eviosys has been formed, manufacturing steel and aluminum food packaging for hundreds of international and regional food and consumer product customers. Eviosys – which derives from the Greek word for “sustainable” – was formed as KPS Capital Partners acquired Crown’s EMEA food and consumer packaging business.
KPS Capital Partners is a leading global private equity firm with nearly three decades’ experience building world-class, industry-leading manufacturing and industrial companies.
Packaging industry executive Tomás López will lead the company as CEO. López previously served as CEO of Mivisa before its acquisition by Crown in 2014.
“This is an incredibly exciting moment for the packaging industry. Eviosys combines 200 years of experience in preserving products and promoting brands, with a future focus on innovating to protect the planet,” he says.
“With the business’ extensive footprint across EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa), the launch of Eviosys means a true step-change for the entire industry that will lead to smart, sustainable packaging for all.”
Eviosys is described as Europe’s largest manufacturer of steel and aluminum food packaging.
Reveling in recyclability
Eviosys’ product portfolio is centered on 100 percent recyclable metal substrates. The company says it will “champion the evolution of truly sustainable packaging, developing solutions for its customers that help them meet their sustainability goals while also protecting the planet, people and communities.”
The company has seven design studios and three laboratories across Europe to develop smart packaging solutions and harness growth opportunities. Growth areas include pet food packaging, which has experienced a huge increase during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The recycling rate of steel packaging in Europe has reached 84 percent, marking an all-time high, according to figures issued by the Association for European Producers of Steel for Packaging (APEAL).
“The implementation of separate collection and sorting, which guarantees high-quality input into recycling operations, is key to driving increased recycling rates,” Alexis Van Maercke, APEAL’s secretary general, tells PackagingInsights.
“This latest record recycling rate also sends a clear message to all stakeholders in the value chain that steel for packaging is tried, tested and perfectly suited to a 21st-century circular economy.”
Meanwhile, according to European Aluminium and Metal Packaging Europe, aluminum beverage can recycling in Europe hit a record 76.1 percent in 2018. In March, European Aluminium and Metal Packaging Europe launched a joint roadmap toward achieving 100 percent aluminum beverage can recycling by 2030.
Strategically located manufacturing
Eviosys reportedly has the largest manufacturing footprint in the region, with 6,300 employees in 44 manufacturing facilities across 17 countries in EMEA. With its strategically located manufacturing facilities, Eviosys will prioritize product quality, preserving products and promoting the reputation of local and international brands in over 100 countries worldwide.
The company is also modernizing and streamlining its manufacturing process to reduce carbon emissions further, including the adoption of electric (rather than gas-powered) forklifts, solar panels and water-based varnishes.
Eviosys plans to launch its sustainability strategy later in 2021.
“With our focus on smart sustainable packaging, Eviosys will take a confident step toward making products fit for our customers, end consumers and the planet. That means clever design solutions and uncompromising quality, with sustainability at the very heart,” concludes Olivier Aubry, SVP sales and marketing at Eviosys.
