Key takeaways
- Hartmann Packaging has collaborated with Sairem to combine its FiberWise molded fiber trays with microwave pasteurization.
- The solution is said to enhance food safety, extend shelf life, and preserve taste without additives.
- The fiber-based trays are developed to replace conventional PET and PP packaging in ready meals and fresh foods.

Hartmann Packaging has aligned its FiberWise modified atmosphere packaging trays with Sairem’s Microwave Pasteurisation Solution. The fiber-based packaging is said to be able to support food treatment methods, ensuring product safety and enhanced quality.
Sairem, an industrial microwave and radio frequency application provider, supports the pasteurization of ready meals and components to extend their shelf life and preserve taste while eliminating the use of preservatives or additives.
The combined solution will be showcased at Interpack 2026 in Düsseldorf, Germany (May 7–13).
Kati Ørskov, business development at Hartmann Packaging, says: “As the packaging industry faces increasing disruption from geopolitical tensions and supply chain instability, many producers of ready meals are experiencing the challenges tied to fossil-based plastics, ranging from price volatility to raw material shortages and limited availability.”
“For producers who pasteurize their ready meals, FiberWise now offers a proven packaging solution that combines operational reliability with a stable supply base. Based on locally sourced fiber materials, FiberWise helps manufacturers reduce dependence on fossil resources while securing a scalable, resilient alternative for long-term planning.”
Plastic reduction
According to the companies, the solution is compatible with existing high-speed denesting and tray-sealing equipment. FiberWise trays provide a plug-and-play approach that requires reduced operational changes, building on Hartmann Packaging’s molded fiber technology.
The companies highlight that FiberWise trays are engineered to replace traditional rigid PET and PP trays in fresh protein and convenience food applications, cutting plastic content by up to 90%. This allows manufacturers to reduce their environmental footprint while supporting circular economy initiatives.
FiberWise trays can be recycled without separating the barrier liner from the fiber tray, according to the company, simplifying disposal for consumers and supporting integration into established paper recycling systems.
Christina Frohm Kramer, business development manager for Food at Sairem, says: “FiberWise trays by Hartmann Packaging are yet another promising concept to bridge the demand for alternatives to plastic trays and a modern, innovative product treatment like the Sairem Microwave Pasteurisation Solution.”
