Key takeaways
- Huhtamaki and Hesburger have developed fiber-based beverage cup lids that are suitable for hot and cold drinks.
- Manufactured in Germany, the plastic-free lids are made from renewable plant-based fibers. They are recyclable and compostable.
- Hesburger expects the switch to reduce its plastic use by 41,000 kg annually, while the redesigned lids improve fit and help prevent leaks.
Huhtamaki has developed fiber-based lids for foodservice cups in collaboration with the Finnish fast food chain Hesburger. The solution is suitable for hot and cold beverages, due to the material’s resistance to heat and moisture.
The companies say the new design offers improved lid fit and a tighter spout to ensure that the lid stays in place on the mug and reduces the risk of leaks.
The lids are said to be made from renewable and plant-based fibers and manufactured at the Huhtamaki Foodservice site in Alf, Germany.
Plastic reduction effort
The fiber lids are compostable, recyclable, and contain no plastic coatings, according to Huhtamaki. Through this transition to fiber lids, Hesburger aims to reduce its plastic usage by 41,000 kg a year.

“The development work with Hesburger has been both smooth and insightful, supporting the sustainability goals of both organizations. This collaboration is a strong reflection of our partnership with Hesburger,” says Mira Eklund, key account manager at Huhtamaki.
Eeva Mäki, international sustainability manager at Hesburger, adds: “We started the development work with Huhtamaki back in 2025, when we first introduced the fiber lids.”
“Based on the feedback we received from customers and staff, we decided to start developing our own branded fiber lid. The goal was to create a more functional and completely plastic-free solution.”
Recently, Huhtamaki also collaborated with Just Eat Takeaway to launch plastic-free boxes across Europe and with Xampla to unveil a board range with plastic-free coating
