Innovia Films has launched P2G, a clear, high gas transmission biaxially oriented PP (BOPP) film developed for flow wrap applications in fresh produce packaging, including pre-prepared vegetables.
P2G is a monomaterial PP solution, and it is said to be recyclable in the PP waste stream. The film was developed to align with the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, helping brand owners move toward the goal of fully recyclable packaging by 2030.
The film aims to support brand owners and packers in maintaining the freshness, quality, and visual appeal of fresh produce throughout the supply chain. It improves gas transmission rates and supports respiration control, enhancing freshness and extending shelf life.
Megan Hinkley, senior product manager for packaging at Innovia Films, says: “P2G represents the next generation of fresh produce packaging. It combines functionality, reliability, and sustainability to meet the evolving needs of retailers, packers, and consumers, while supporting the industry’s transition to more circular packaging solutions.”
Enhancing sustainability credentials
P2G is designed to be heat-sealable on both sides, ensuring secure and consistent sealing performance. Its optical clarity maintains clear visibility of produce. The new product is printable for branding and customization needs, assisting products to stand out on shelf.
The film is said to retain its puncture and impact resistance at low temperatures, providing protection during transportation and storage, while remaining unaffected by variations in climatic conditions.
P2G can incorporate chemically recycled and bio-sourced ISCC-certified polymers via mass balance. This method supports compliance with recycled content targets while meeting the performance standards needed for fresh produce packaging, according to Innovia Films.
Last year, Innovia Films introduced the Rayoart coating line for graphics film applications at its production plant in Wigton, UK. The coater was developed to produce the company’s PVC-free Rayoart film.
