Cartonboard producer MM Karton has claimed that it has developed an “innovative” new recycled cartonboard that protects against migration of mineral oils into foodstuffs.
In a statement, MM Karton said: “An innovative barrier is applied on the food contact side of the board which stops the migration of mineral oils and other non-intended added substances into foodstuff.”
MM Karton head of marketing Horst Bittermann said MM Karton was currently running tests, of the product, with ten of the world’s biggest food producers.
The issue of mineral oils leaking into packaging hit the headlines when the BBC broke a story that mineral oils found in recycled cartonboard packaging were finding their way into food and could cause cancer.
‘Solution to the food industry and retailers’
Big-scale production will take place as of next year, Bittermann said. He also said that Foodboard could provide a solution to the food industry and retailers.
He added: “Foodboard is an innovative cartonboard and a sustainable packaging solution.”
Foodboard is fully recyclable and compostable, said the firm.
According to MM Karton, the Foodboard barrier’s effectiveness has been “proven and confirmed by the internationally respected migration research centre FABES”.
FABES head Dr Otto Piringer said: “Applying the barrierboard less than 1% of the potential migrating substances into Tenax were measured compared with the extracted initial quantity.”
According to MM Karton, migration is blocked by more than 99% and is always below the often mentioned safety limit of 0.6 mg/kg for mineral oils if “Foodboard” is applied according to its intended use.
The German Federal Risk Assessment Authority, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and many food packaging companies are currently investigating the situation, and looking for solutions throughout the value chain.
